With its extensive park system of almost 200 parks, Indianapolis has an outdoor recreation area for visitors of all ages, as well as their pets. The city has two state parks, both of which have room for dogs to spend some time with their families.

The Fort Harrison State Park offers outdoor activities for all seasons, ranging from canoe trips in the summer to sledding in the winter. The White River State Park, which is located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, has 250 acres of green space where guests and their four-legged companions can enjoy the beautiful outdoors.

For some off-leash fun, bring your pup to the Humane Society of Indianapolis’ campus, which features a fenced-in area for dogs to play in. There is an agility course with some fun obstacles in the area, as well as several shaded trails that are convenient after Fidos energy levels subside after a long day.

When you’re ready to take a break, stop by at one of the nearly two dozen dog-friendly restaurants in the city. Popular destinations such as Scratchtruck, Bosphorus Cafe, and Flatwater Restaurant make great choices for a lunch date on a weekend. These establishments have outdoor areas where dogs are welcome, providing pet owners in Indianapolis yet another spot in which to enjoy the quiet, unconditional company of their most loyal friends.

There are lots of fun options when it comes to things to do for pooches in Broad Ripple. This neighborhood offers two different converted railway trails to hike, thanks to the Rails to Trails conservation initiative. Monon Trail is an abandoned railway corridor turned walking path that is perfect for explores with your pup! The IWC Canal Greenway, or Central Canal Trail as it is sometimes called, is a historic canal towpath that has been restored into a hiking trail. Both locations have easy-to-access parking and information maps to keep you and Rover headed in the right direction. Not too far away lies the Broad Ripple Dog Park for fenced-in, off-leash doggy fun! To access this park you do need to hold a Pooch Pass, but these are easily obtained at various establishments across the city. There are poop bags and waste bins on site, but you do need to bring your own water and dog bowls to hydrate all of the pack play that takes place at this ter-ruff-ic dog park.

The grounds are large and perfect for games of fetch, frisbee or chase! Don't forget to bring some water and a dish to give your dog a drink after all of that running. A Pooch Pass is needed to enter this dog park, which can be purchased at various locations in Indianapolis. Tracy Trail is nearby, if you're feeling like exploring an old railroad corridor. Furry guests are welcome as long as they are leashed. As this trail is one of the Rails to Trails areas, it comes with nearby parking and an info map for your hiking pleasure.

Pike Township is a great place for dogs! It is home to the sixth largest city park in the entire country-- Eagle Creek Park! This huge park is excellent for hiking on leash or for leash-free fun inside the 5 acre dog section. For a small $10 fee, you get a key card that allows you all day access to the premises. When purchasing the pass, make sure you bring your dog's vaccination papers to prove that he is up to date. There is a large marsh in the back of the dog park, so muddy mutts are a definite possibility. Fountains are located throughout the grounds; all you need is a dish to keep your pup watered. Good times are waiting for you and your fur-baby over at Eagle Creek Park.

Dogs and their humans in Springhill are close to some pretty great outdoor experiences. The 100 Acres Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park may be a bit hard to find, but it is well worth the effort! Forget you are in the city as you and your pup spend the day getting lost in the lush, green trails. Plan a picnic filled with doggy treats to eat el fresco by the lake! Turn your doggo into a cultured hound as you walk through the outdoor art installations. Leashes are needed throughout this park and it's a good idea to bring a towel for muddy paws. There is fun for the whole family in these grounds located behind the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the best part is it's totally free!

"Mish is so wonderful! She was very punctual for the walk. During the walk she made me feel confident that my pup was well taken care of. She kept me updated the whole time and sent my lots of pics and even a video of the walk. I felt like Hazel was in wonderful hands. She even went above and beyond by giving Hazel treats before and after her walk and wiping her paws off after the walk. I will definitely be using Mish again and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a reliable walker that does more than she's asked. "
