Iowa City may be one of the most pet-friendly places in the country. From hotels and RV parks to restaurants and bakeries, it’s easy to plan an out-on-the-town adventure and include your four-legged companion.

As for daytime activities, check out the North Liberty Farmer’s Market. Running from May to October, this market welcomes leashed dogs to browse (or sniff!) the stands of fresh produce and homemade goods. Or, try the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, Museum, and Birthplace Cottage, which has over 81 acres of walkable prairie land.

For dining options, several local restaurants offer dog-friendly outdoor seating. One such place is the New Pioneer Food Co-op, which offers produce, seafood, meats, and baked goods. Or try Atlas for fresh, seasonal dishes and a changing wine menu. Surely not to miss is Woofables Gourmet Dog Bakery – who wouldn’t want to pamper their beloved dog with a delectable treat?

If you and Fido have any interest in soaking up the sunshine, there are several dog parks in Iowa City. Thornberry Off-Leash Dog Park offers 11 acres of green space, as well as a special training and agility section. In addition, the Devonian Fossil Gorge accommodates leashed dogs who want to explore the area’s ancient bedrock. No matter where your interests take you, Iowa City is sure to provide excitement and adventure.

Thornberry Dog Park is a massive 11-acre park that is something to bark at. It is divided into three large areas. There is a small dog area. There is a doggy playground for dogs of all sizes to share. Then there is Emma’s Running and Training Ground. This is where you can practice some new tricks with Fido or let him show off his existing ones. If that isn’t enough, there is a pond in the middle of the park, with one side designated for swimming. Fido will need to wear a permit tag while visiting this park, which can be obtained through the city’s parks and rec department.

The Rita’s Ranch Dog Park is a wide-open space that is designed just for Fido to run free without his leash. You will need to get a permit from the animal care center, but the fees go to caring for the park and the animals in the center. There are plenty of seating areas where you can watch Fido play. Water bowls are provided; water, however, is not, so make sure to bring your own. Come and play fetch and have fun after enjoying the dog perks of Scott Park.
