Fort Sam Houston
Venture just outside of JBSA – Fort Sam Houston into San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston residential neighborhood and explore the area’s Salado Creek Greenway. Start your jaunt with your leashed pup at the Jack White Park Trailhead. The scenery is puptacular as the path is lined with huge native trees. There’s lots of things to sniff too, as the trail meanders close to Salado Creek – you just might run into some wildlife! If you choose to travel the entire 5.6-mile stretch, your adventure will take you south to Covington Park, another great place to enjoy fresh air and a picnic. The Fort Sam Houston neighborhood is also home to John James Park, which has large grassy areas and a one-mile path that winds through the park. Remember to bring drinking water, a leash and cleanup bags.

Downtown San Antonio
You’ll find just about everything you need to make your pup happy in San Antonio’s Downtown neighborhood, just three miles from JBSA – Fort Sam Houston. Just 16 miles from JBSA – Fort Sam Houston, this park is understandably very pawpular among locals. Your dog can take a dip in the creek to cool off, and romp around in the acre of fenced-in off-leash area. The park also has designated areas for large and small dogs. If your pup gets a little too dirty, there’s a fur-iffic shower to rinse off muddy pups. There are benches and water fountains for dogs and people. Be sure to check out the additional off-leash area in the park near the Timber Creek entrance by the new pavilion and playground! Meadow Village’s Westwood Village Park is another great place for a picnic with your leashed pup.

The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake is great place to spend the day, or a weekend with Fido! In this neighborhood, an hour’s drive from JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, the recreation area is only open to DOD cardholders. This park has 250 acres of lakefront property that is open year-round for exploration with your pup. Take a hike on the nature trail, hang out at the pet-friendly shorelines, cool off with a dip in the lake, or make use of the boat ramps. The park’s marina even rents boats and watersports equipment. If you and your pup want to stay a while, the park has pet-friendly cabins and campsites, too! Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park, except at Horseshoe Bay. Remember to bring drinking water, a leash and cleanup bags.
