The interesting thing about Jefferson, Maryland is that it was laid out in 1774, but didn't become incorporated until 1831. Only one year later, the residents decided they didn't need a town government, so the community was unincorporated again in 1832.

Today, this tiny town is still unincorporated, and is home to a little more than 2,000 people. If you and Fido are hunting for a quiet, rural community that's still in close proximity to metropolitan areas like Frederick and Hagerstown, look no further than Jefferson, Maryland!

Take a walk through the historic Gathland State Park in Jefferson. Bring a leash and lots of water, because there is so much to see here that you will want to spend the whole day. Walk through battlefields, see the War Correspondent Arch, and stroll through Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Some of these monuments have been here since the 1800s.

If you want something quieter, take a walk through Cambridge Farms Park. This is a dog-friendly green space with a few water fountains, play grounds, and trails to roam. The park isn't very busy, which makes it perfect for an afternoon stroll.

Jefferson might be small, but that doesn't mean there's nothing for you and your dog to do here!

Frederick is about eight miles from Jefferson, and is home to some unique dog-friendly places where you and your hound can chow down. While you are here, check out Monocacy Crossing. The fare is upscale American cuisine. The braised lamb is a local favorite. You will find the staff here very accommodating when it comes to your fur baby, but they won't serve him. You can bring his own dish if you would like for him to have water. All dogs who dine here with their pawesome parents must be leashed, and are welcome at the outdoor seating area.

Ballenger Creek Dog Park is fully fenced so that you can let your dog off his leash and just let him run for a bit. There is no running water guaranteed -- there are water faucets, but they are only open in the summer months, so be sure to bring your own. The park provides cleaning stations that are well-stocked with doggie waste bags and scoopers. You can sit back on the bench and watch your dog play, or bring a ball and get ready to play fetch until your arm is sore.
