Amenities also include a wide variety of athletic fields. Leashed dogs are welcome to join in on the fun in this park, just don’t forget the waste bags! When your stomachs are growling, head over to the Sunrise Bistro. This bistro offers a large variety of sandwiches and a cozy, colorful atmosphere. Dogs are welcome on the small back patio.

West Beach Village
For a chance to enjoy the ocean with your pupper, head to the West beach village neighborhood of Kiawah Island! It’s here that you can find the pawrific Kiawah Beachwalker Park. This quiet and serene beach is located just a couple minutes outside the southwest border of Johns Island. From November 1st until March 15th, dogs are welcome to enjoy the park off-leash in the section located just outside the swim area! All other times, during the peak season, they are still welcome, but must remain leashed. At this beach, you can enjoy ocean and river views, and tall sand dunes. Other amenities include restrooms and a small snack shack.

James Island
Just a hop across the Stono river to the east brings you to James Island in Charleston. It’s here that you can find the woofderful James Island County Park, under a 20 minute drive from Johns Island. This peaceful park is full of tidal creeks and trails, and activities for the whole family. Possibly the best part, is the dog park! This dog park is said to be one of the best in Charleston, and features four acres of open grassy space and a dog beach. Your playful pup can run, rinse and repeat all day with his or her new furry friends. Amenities include a cleaning station, waste station, and a separate fenced off area for smaller dogs. If you want to stay here for a while, the surrounding park also features a campground. Dogs are welcome, of course, as long as they stay leashed when they’re not within the dog park and get picked up after.

Wadmalaw Island
Just across the river on Wadmalaw Island, you can find another unique way to explore the area with your pooch! It’s on this island that you can find the Charleston Tea Plantation. This working tea-growing plantation is the only one in North America where you can see hundreds of thousands of tea bushes stretching out before your eyes. You can learn about how tea is made and the history of the area. Leashed dogs are welcome to join you in exploring the beautiful 127 acres, as long as they are picked up after and follow proper petiquette. Only service dogs are permitted in the shop and on trolley tours.
