Though Loveland is 23 miles west of La Salle, the shopping and dining options and some really rebarkable parks will lure you over for the occasional doggy day out. The Kings Corner neighborhood has an off-leash dog park at Fairgrounds Park, with separate space for big and little pups, plus water fountains and ample shade. Back on-leash, sniff out the walking trail that follows the Big Thompson River through the park and beyond. It’s part of the Loveland Recreational Trails 19-mile loop. Depending on how much energy your pups have, keep going to Centennial Park, then stop to fill up your water bottles and use the restrooms before a return trip or a truly epic full-city roundabout.

F Street/ Stoneybrook
Rover’s Run Dog Park on F Street in northern Greeley is a furrific spot for some off-leash play, and one of many trailheads for the Poudre River Trails can be found here. Though small, the fenced enclosure about 5 miles north of La Salle means your pup can run around while you relax on a bench. (Locals note that the fence isn’t as secure as they’d like, so keep an eye on small dogs with a breaking-and-exiting rap sheet.) If you’re in need of a workout, too, take advantage of the Poudre River Trailhead. Greeley’s signature hiking trail, this 21-mile mixed-use path follows the river from Windsor to the west to Greeley’s far eastern boundary. If you head west from Rover’s Run, your next available pit stop (portable toilet only) is at the pretty Signature Bluffs Natural Area. Heading east, you’ll reach the scenic Poudre Ponds before the trail ends at Island Grove Regional Park.

Glenmere/Cranford
University of Northern Colorado was a higher education trendsetter back in 2014 when it became one of the first US colleges to add pet-friendly dormitories. That means that your pup will probably make a lot of new friends — both dog-loving students and their party-animal pets — as you explore the pretty campus 4.5 miles north of La Salle. If your pup would rather get away from all that college pressure, the peaceful nature paths at Glenmere Park are a block northwest of Doubenmier Field. The trail loops around the park pond, and you can extend your trip on tree-lined residential streets among the beautifully maintained mid-century homes. (You won’t find many sidewalks, but traffic is light enough for a daytime stroll.)

West Greeley
West Greeley has such plentiful parks that your doggos will beg for a tour. Due west of Greeley Mall and 4 miles north of La Salle, the Gateway Lakes Natural Area has paved and natural-surface paths winding through peaceful wetlands, woods, and meadows. Note that there’s a daily parking fee at Gateway Lakes, so if you don’t feel like paying, head across Highway 34 to explore a trio of city parks to your north. West Greeley Park next to the high school has an extensive trail network and small pond, and Monfort Park on 47th Avenue has dog-friendly paths around the soccer fields. You can walk from West Greeley to Monfort through the pretty residential neighborhood of well-kept middle-class homes in between. Circling back south, Josephine Jones Park has trails, a playground, and a pond. If you make it that far, even your most energetic pups will be ready to head home for a nap.

42 Street
Evans’s off-leash dog park is on the south side of town, just 2 miles from La Salle. Located in Freedom Park on 42nd Street, the Freedom Dog Park lives up to its name, so shake off that leash and let your fur down! The small- and large-dog fenced areas also offer agility equipment. Two community parks with walking trails are half-a-mile west if you need more room to roam, and Riverside Park the far eastern end of 42nd Street provides 101 waterfront acres. A walking trail circles the 7-acre lake, and fishing, splashing, and paddling opportunities abound in the South Platte River. Though the park was badly damaged in a 2013 flood, it is in the final stages of repair and will soon be fully reopened.
