Lakeview East is steeped in history, starting out as an 'out in the country' resort area in the early 1800’s. Today, it is one of the trendiest and nicest places to live along the lake in Chicago. This area is filled with high rise apartments, marinas, and lots of trendy eateries and clubs. For dog lovers, walking is mostly urban, but there is an abundance of paths along the shores of the lake to walk. There are a few outdoor eateries that make eating and walking the dog an easy task. Pet stores are not in short supply, and neither are groomers and veterinarians. There is everything that a pampered pooch could possibly want within a very short walking distance.

During the summer, the breeze off the water can keep days a bit cooler while winter walking could be more of a problem with snow and ice. You may find that there some days where staying home might be advisable.

You won’t find any elevation changes in Chicago, which might make getting in a workout while you walk a bit tough. But since there are plenty of paths along the lake and lots of grass, you can just increase your walk and make up for the lack of hills.

Despite the urban setting with an abundance of high rises, much of this area has tree-lined streets, some with patches of grass running parallel to the sidewalks. This makes urban walking just a bit nicer since your four-footed friend can spend ample time exploring all the sights and smells along your walking route. You can count on walking on mostly concrete no matter what route you choose, but wide swaths of grass along the lakeshore can give you and your dog a chance to get off and away from the concrete for a bit. Keep in mind that hot pavement can be painful for sensitive paws during the summer.

There are only a couple of small playgrounds with little in the way of grass inside of Lake View East, but since it borders a large greenway along the lake, this more than makes up for this fact. The neighborhood is small enough that it is a short walk from anywhere within its borders to the greenway on the lake and it extends to the north and south of the neighborhood by a good measure offering the opportunity for long walks. There is even a bird sanctuary with trails, fields, a picnic area, and marinas all within easy walking distance.

Perhaps one of the biggest attractions for dog lovers in this area is a dog-friendly beach that is completely fenced in so dogs can run and swim to their heart’s content. There is also another dog-friendly park just to the south of Lake View East that is not on the water and may be a better choice for cooler days.
