Part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, this trail spans an incredible 279.5 miles from Buffalo to Albany, and passes through Lockport. Along the way, you’ll see some of the original locks the town is named for, as well as a modern lock that is in operation today. If your journey works up an appetite, stop by Scripts Café. This restaurant has dog-friendly outdoor seating and offers up a variety of sandwiches, soups, coffee and delectable baked treats. There are even vegetarian options.

Spend a day hiking with your canine companion at Rolin T. Grant Gulf Wilderness Park in Lockport’s North Park region. This park features four interconnected trails that form loops, with each loop spanning approximately 1.5 miles. There are a few bridges, a waterfall and plenty of beautiful scenery. There are also benches where you can sit, relax and take in nature. This little park is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a short hike. Leashed dogs are welcome, as long as they are cleaned up after. Make note that there are no trashcans and cleanup supplies are not provided.

Located just 10 miles south of Lockport, Amherst’s Swormville neighborhood is a pawfect destination for pups and their parents. Approximately 18 miles southwest of Lockport, the Parkview neighborhood in Tonawanda is home to a truly unique canine destination. Ellicott Island Park is an amazing off-leash park that is situated on an island. There is more than enough room for dogs to run and even a few doggy beaches where your dog can take a dip. Cleanup bags and water are provided, and there are restrooms and picnic tables for pet parents. There’s even a small outdoor library and a paw wash station. This is one truly amazing park that you need check out when you’re in the area!
