Rivers State Park, named for the location where the Susquehanna and Chemung
Rivers come together. The park’s 553 acres feature stunning views and
multiple unmarked trails where folks and their canine companions can hike and
bike. Largely undeveloped, this land is for the true trailblazers who want to
go their way, and those that do are rewarded
with mountain and river views, plus sightings of all kinds of wildlife in the
forest. The Waverly Glen Park is just south of Two Rivers, and it features an 11-mile marked trail which
brings the hiker to a large waterfall, particularly impressive in the spring. Open
year-round, it’s pawrfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, too!

Chemung
Chemung, just a few miles southeast of Lowman, is home to the Maple Hill State Forest, which is a minimally developed property of roughly 600 acres that features primitive camping and loads of room for hiking through its woods and meadows. There are no designated trails or maintained areas, so be sure to bring water, compass, and other backcountry gear if you’re going to head out with Fido in tow. In the winter, the forest is open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with your furry buddy, who must be on a leash when in the forest, whatever the season. If you’re looking to see wildlife, this is the spot! Besides birds of every species, you may also see wild turkey, deer, and beaver, among other denizens. The city of Elmira is northwest of Lowman, and it’s where you’ll find the dog-friendly Mark Twain Riverside Park, which is located on the Chemung River as it travels through the city. The park features brick-paved walks, lots of green grassy areas, and benches for relaxing and watching the river traffic. A pond with a fountain and a bridge walkway soothes with the sound of splashing water. There are also picnic tables where you and Fido can sit and enjoy a meal from one of the shops across the street or bring your own lunch! Big Flats is a small community near Elmira and Lowman that is host to the Plymouth Woods Nature Preserve, a dog-friendly 88-acre area with abundant soft- and hardwood trees along with decorative dogwood and mountain laurel. A combination of upland forest and a wetland, it even boasts a small ravine for interesting exploring. Rich in wildlife, you may see porcupines along with the usual small mammals and deer. Although not many live in the preserve, you might also encounter a timber rattlesnake, so be watchful, and be sure to keep Fido firmly leashed.
