Constable
Constable is a hamlet in the town of Chateaugay, and it’s where you’ll find the pup-friendly Trout River State Forest. The forest covers 635 acres of woodlands accessible from Poplar Street, where there is parking. The trailheads for Trout River’s two connected looping trails are at Poplar Street as well, and together they total about 2 miles. Leashed pooches are welcome to explore the Trout River Forest, and they’ll have fun spying the wildlife that makes this their habitat, including many birds and mammals. At-large primitive camping is allowed here, but bring everything you will need for both you and Fido, including blaze orange garments during hunting season!

Dickinson
Dickinson is a rural town just southeast of Malone that contains access to the Deer River State Forest. Its 12,000 acres are relatively undeveloped, although there are nine designated camping sites with an open area for a tent and a fire ring, but no other amenities or services. Access to forest access roads and the Deer River is available to and from the camp areas. Many brooks, streams, and creeks, with the wildlife that collects around them, make their home here, too. A short marked trail runs along the Deer River, but there are opportunities for hiking with Fido on other unmarked trails and unpaved roads throughout the forest. Woofderful!

Bombay is home to the Bombay State Forest which, combined with the connecting Brasher State Forest in Brasher, comprises 22,000 acres of woodlands, marshes, swamps and other wetlands. This area provides a home for birds, fish, and amphibians and you and your leashed fur-buddy are likely to see many of them. The extensive trail system is marked for their identity as well as for what activities each trail is best used for, such as hiking and cross-country skiing. With 66 miles of trails and unpaved roadways, you won’t run out of places to explore! If camping with Fido is your thing, tenting can be found at 25 campsites scattered throughout the park, plus at-large camping is also available. Pawsome!
