Marina Del Rey is located on the Pacific Ocean south of Santa Monica and Ocean Park. The community of Marina Del Rey incorporates the world's largest man-made, small craft harbor, which has harbor basins that can moor 5,300 small craft. Also, a feature of this community is Fisherman's Village, a waterfront mall and local tourist attraction. The area features multiple tourist services, including hotels, restaurants, boat rentals, and other business catering to the marina, tourists, and visitors to Venice Beach, which is located on the west side.

The climate is hot, dry, and sunny almost year round, however, cool breezes off the Pacific Ocean make walking in this neighborhood more enjoyable. Marina Del Rey features several pet services, including boutiques, shops and grooming services that cater to locals and tourists alike.

The most significant feature of Marina Del Rey is the man-made marina which is surrounded by high rise residents, hotels, shops, and restaurants. Most residential buildings are multifamily complexes, apartments, condos, and townhouses although some single family beach residences are also located in this community.

The harbor has 8 basins that are separated by six strips of land. Each strip of land has a street on it to access berths and services along the marina. Venice Beach is located along the western side of the community. Marina Del Rey is a popular tourist destination and features plenty of pedestrian ways to accommodate locals and tourists in accessing hotels and restaurants, the beachfront, and associated services. The area is flat and easy for walking and sandy beaches may even inspire you to go barefoot, but watch out for debris on the beach, such as shells, driftwood or misplaced jellies that could sting you or your pet. Keep your dog leashed in this busy area, as there is plenty of activity and traffic that can be confusing for a dog, and an off-leash pet can easily become disoriented, separated, and lost in this busy tourist area.

The most exciting greenway feature of this area is Venice Beach, which runs along the entire west side of Marina Del Rey. Dogs are welcome on Venice Beach, as long as they are leashed. The Beach is a great place for you and your dog to enjoy the sand, surf, and wade in the Pacific to cool off on a hot summer day.  The marina also features a surf-free sheltered beach, sometimes referred to as Mothers Beach, which features playground facilities and is a favorite of local and visiting families with children. This beach also features a playground, picnic tables, and other kid-friendly attractions.

The Ballona Wetlands Ecological reserve borders this community and provides natural habitat for native flora and fauna in a protected environment, but you will have to view from afar with your dog, as pets are not allowed in this preserved area.

If you are looking specifically for an off-leash dog park, The Boneyard Dog Park, located in nearby Culver City Park, features a dirt surface, off-leash area, with lighting for nighttime access, as well as covered benches to provide shade to owners and overheated pups.
