Sunny, friendly and diverse, Maywood CA is the third-smallest city in Southeast LA County. Originally a Spanish settlement, today’s residents can appreciate a multicultural but small-town feel close to all the amenities of the greater LA area. Maywood has a strong community spirit -- visit on Memorial Day weekend and you and your pooch can take part in lots of outdoor activities as part of the annual Street Fair! Be sure to check out the food trucks along the route, where you’ll find a huge variety of cuisines from all around the world. Unfortunately, there are no veterinary services in Maywood, but you can find several clinics to look after your buddy, as well as 24-hour emergency care, just a short drive away in Bell.

There’s no dog park in Maywood, but you and your furry friend can still sniff out some exercise options! The Maywood Riverfront Park is a pawesome spot for leashed walks, and has an access point to the 40-mile LA River Trail. Although Maywood may be urban, it’s not too far from some really excellent dog-friendly hiking trails. And you’ll find plenty of places for off-leash adventures, as well as doggy dining, just a little fur-ther afield in the surrounding area!

The South Gate Dog Park at Hollydale Park is a real mutts-visit! The park is well-shaded by trees, so you can let your pooch leap about to their heart’s content without worrying about them getting overheated in the California sun. There’s a separate area for large and small dogs, and water and bags are provided, so all you need to do is bring your buddy, some toys and your enthusiasm. It’s also worth checking out the people side of the park -- Hollydale Park is a lovely little oasis in the middle of an urban area, with a calm walking trail running by the river.

Downey is home to one of the many entrances to the San Gabriel River Valley Trail, a fantastic spot for some fur-friendly leashed hiking. While the walk is a greenway rather than a proper hiking trail, it does pass through the Wilderness Park, an area as scenic and natural as its name suggests. If your four-legged friend needs to run free after so long on the leash, why not check out the dog park at Rio San Gabriel Park? While not as large as the park at South Gate, there’s still plenty of space for your buddy to burn some energy, and water and bags are provided.

Your buddy will love a day out in LA’s Arts District! The Arts District Dog Park is a furrific spot with different areas for shy and friendly dogs. Rather than plastic bags, the park provides environmentally friendly pooper-scoopers along with water and toys, so all you need to do is BYOB (Bring Your Own Beast!). After you and your pooch are tired out, you two can pop in to the dog-friendly Angel City Brewery. The pooch-loving owners of this craft beer joint allow canine customers inside, so there’s no need to leave your buddy tied up while you order, and there are always plenty of food trucks outside.

You’d need to be barking mad not to bring your buddy to Elysian Park! If your four-legged friend likes hiking, they’ll love the six miles of eucalyptus-lined trails. The 3-mile loop only has a moderate incline, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels, and owners will certainly appreciate the breathtaking vistas of Los Angeles. If you and your pooch are more athletically inclined, try Baxter’s Stairs for a more thorough workout. Just remember to bring your own bags and water! As an added bonus, there’s plenty of parking, and several restrooms for humans.

Turnbull Canyon Hiking Trail in Whittier is a pawfect spot for you and your pooch to get back to nature! The trail is less forgiving than the ones in Elysian Park, but if you can make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful views over LA and Rose Hills. For off-leash exercise, stop by the Whittier Dog Park. There’s plenty of space in both the large and small dog runs. Seats for tired owners, waste bags, and water are provided. Go in the morning and you two can chow down afterwards at Auntie’s Bakery and Cafe, a fabulous breakfast joint that welcomes wagging tails at outdoor tables.
