Monticello, Indiana is a city that embraces change. Originally, it was a farming community, but as other opportunities came along, the city took advantage. In 1923, Monticello went to work building a dam, and the result was Lake Schaffer. Then, in 1925, Lake Freeman was created. These two major changes to the landscape resulted in two ideal pet vacation spots that you'd be barking mad to miss!

People and pups from miles around come to Monticello to enjoy a little lakeside fun. Lake Schaffer is home to Indiana Beach, which is an amusement park and campground. It is mostly pet-friendly. In fact, it has a campground where you can bring your RV or pitch a tent, but please note that pets are only allowed in the campsites, not in the cabins. There are trails for you and your dog to enjoy as well as many opportunities for family fun!

Lake Freeman is almost completely the opposite. First, it is less commercial and more country. There are more opportunities for fishing, wakeboarding, and boating. It is relaxed, laid-back, and very pup-friendly. In fact, you should make it a point to meet Sadie, a precious pupper who loves hanging out at the lake! She is a water-loving, boat-watching, fishing dog. She also loves to meet other pups! Oh, and keep your eyes peeled; you may even see a bald eagle while you're here!

Altherr Nature Park is undergoing some changes. It was already a family park where you could walk and enjoy nature, but the Eagle Scouts have adopted it and are working hard to improve it. Some buildings are being moved to make room for more trails. This well-maintained park is a staple in the community, and you'll want to come back again and again to see what's new. Please remember to clean up after your dog during your visit and bring plenty of waste baggies with you. This is an on-leash park. Bring water as well since none is available here.

In 1974, an F4 tornado tore through Monticello. Not only were the courthouse and homes destroyed, but eight people also lost their lives. The Historical Society and Wells Fargo Bank came together to donate and raise money for the Tornado Memorial. Using pieces of the former courthouse, the town created a space where you can walk your dog and learn about the disaster and how it united the community. It is a unique park that everyone should visit if they get the opportunity. This is an on-leash park. You will need to bring water and waste bags with you; they aren't provided here.

Come take a nice long walk along the water and enjoy the peace of nature with your dog at Bluewater Beach Park. There is a swimming area, but dogs aren't allowed to swim. There are paths to walk with your dog, as well as picnic areas and pavilions. You must have your dog on a leash at all times. In the summer months, there is water available at the picnic areas. The park is open all year long for your enjoyment. This furrific park is one of the city's most recent additions, so be sure to check it out, and feel free to bring the whole pack!

There is a whole park in Monticello that is dedicated to sports of all kinds. From basketball to swimming, this is the place to stay active! Voigt Park has a walking trail in its thirty-five acres. Dogs aren't allowed indoors, but there's plenty of outdoor activities to explore. Your dog will love it here because of its fun and upbeat atmosphere. There are restrooms and water fountains, but you can't take your dog inside and the fountains are high, so bring Fido's water dish with you. This is an on-leash park. Don't forget those waste bags to keep the park tidy!
