Tassel Hill State Forest
When you are ready to explore outside of New Hartford, there are multiple other cities in the surrounding Oneida County. Visitors looking to experience the majestic wonders of the Adirondack Mountain's waterfalls can take a ten-minute drive to Utica, where the Tassel Hill State Forest is located. This 2,663-acre state forest, also called the Albert J. Woodford Memorial State Forest, features the highest point in Oneida County, Tassel Hill at 1,945 feet high. In this park, visitors can fish off of the Chittning Pond fishing pier. Bring a picnic for you and Fido so you can spend the day here, and make sure you don't miss Frostbite Falls, the gorgeous waterfalls southwest of Tassel Hill.

Riverdale
In addition to New Hartford's dog park, central New York offers more for Fido just fifteen miles down the road in Rome. If you are looking for a pawesome place to let your four-legged friends roam free, check out the Rome Bark Park. Visitors should know ahead of time that, to access the park, you will need to apply for a permit. Once you are approved, you will be given a key to access the park during the established hours. Bring a leash, as is the rule, and only two dogs per owner are allowed. No more than fifteen dogs total at a time can be on the property. When you are inside the fenced-in area, your pups are allowed to run free and enjoy the playground!

Delta Lake
For those who want to get out and experience more of the glories of the Adirondack Mountains, Delta Lake State Park is an excellent place for dogs to play. The park is located on a peninsula extending into Delta Reservoir, with flat, wooded areas. Visitors can enjoy the many hiking and nature trails and then picnic in the pavilion areas. Household pets are allowed, but they must be caged or on a leash, not more than 6 feet long. However, they are not allowed in the bathing areas but you can take them through the rest of the park and explore.

An often overlooked park in Oneida County is the Lock 20 Canal State Park, found in Marcy, just eleven miles outside of New Hartford. This beautiful area is the perfect place to bring Fido for a picnic or just to watch the boats go through the canal locks, which is something most people never get to see. The Lock 20 Canal State Park is always clean and full of amenities like picnic tables, restrooms, and shelters from inclement weather. When the locks are not in use, you and Fido can access the canal trail on the other side and explore the scenic grounds.
