North Andover, Massachusetts used to be part of Andover. Then, the new church went up in the 1700s. The parish was divided. At first, it wasn't really a big deal, but then the fighting ensued, so the parish was divided into North and South. Both Andover and North Andover have thrived since the 1700s.

This sleepy little town is believed to be the final resting place of Anne Bradstreet, famous 17th-century American poet. She died here at the age of 60, and, although the location of her grave has yet to be confirmed, she is thought to be buried at the Old Burying Ground. Perhaps you and your (leashed) pooch should take a stroll among the grounds to sniff out this mystery for yourselves!

North Andover also has another unique place for you and your dog to visit: a maple syrup farm! It's only open seasonally, but when it is open, it is an experience to remember. You can call ahead a book a kid-friendly -- and dog-friendly! -- tour to see the step-by-step process of making maple syrup. Afterward, stop by the store to grab a bottle of fresh maple syrup straight from the source.

If you're looking for an adventure that's a little more active, or if you've had your fill of sugary goodness at the maple syrup farm, check out the Bay Circuit Trail. The entire trail network stretches for 200 miles throughout Massachusetts. You can find a trailhead at the Ward Reservation in North Andover. Be sure to bring water and waste baggies with you!

Smolak Farms Ice Cream Stand is just the right spot to enjoy ice cream because it is located in a historic home that is over three centuries old. The best part is that you can get all of your favorite flavors of ice cream, or you can try something completely unique. The locals love the Cappuccino Donut Fudge Swirl. Yum...we're drooling just thinking about it! The s'mores are pretty good too. Your dog can join you for ice cream if you don't mind sitting on the patio. Just make sure that you have a leash and that your dog can handle crowds.

Baystate Chowder has all your favorite New England comfort foods just waiting for you to come and chowder down. (See what we did there?) Grab a warm bowl of clam chowder made fresh every single day. You could grab a lobster roll if you want something that's easier to eat on the go. The best part is that all you need to do is walk up to the patio with your dog and the waitress will come right out and greet you. Dogs are always welcome as long as they are friendly and on a leash. This is a friendly, feel-good place that's the pawfect lunch destination on a cold day.

Sure, everyone loves pizza -- and dogs certainly aren't an exception! There's something mouthwatering about the way that the cheese stretches when you lift up the slice. But, if you come on over to House of Pizza, you will find so much more than just pizza. Delight in crave-worthy foods like chicken babobs or classic calzones. The steak tips have just the right amount of glaze to keep them tender and delicious. Bring your dog over and get a burger for you both. Just be sure to bring a leash and water bowl with you while you share a slice at the outdoor seating area.
