Norwood Park is one of the larger communities designated by Chicago and it contains a number of smaller neighborhoods. Established in 1872, it has seen a lot of history and is home to a number of historic buildings and districts. Norwood is divided in half by the presence of the Kennedy Expressway, but there are plenty of places to walk on either side. There are pet stores and veterinarian clinics on both sides as well, so no matter where you choose to walk, there is easy access to many amenities. Norwood is mainly residential, but you will find a few commercial areas where you might find a drink or bite to eat if you are so inclined. You can expect to enjoy walks from spring to fall, where the weather is quite nice except at the height of summer. Winters tend to be harsh, so you will have to pick your times carefully.

Because all of Chicago is flat, trying to find ways to make walks challenging demands a bit of creativity on your part. If you are only out for a stroll and a chance to give your best friend some fresh air, you may enjoy the flat terrain, but if you want to get your heart rate going, you will need to walk extra far or pick up the speed a notch or two. Walking in Norwood is a pretty big mixed bag of terrain in terms of greenery. All your walking will be done on sidewalks unless you decide to head to one of the local parks. Some of the streets have more grass and trees available than others, it just depends on the neighborhood you are in. Fortunately, there are a number of greenways available and even a dog park, so there are options that allow for a change of scenery and pace for Fido.

You will find small parks and greenways dotted through out the community, including Oriole Park which consists mostly of sports fields. However, a path around the park allows you to take your dog someplace where he can wander among the grass and trees. At the northeast corner of Norwood is access to a very large greenway that is a part of Edgebrook and surrounding communities. It has a trailhead at the Caldwell Woods picnic grove that is easily accessible with a long trail and plenty of grass and trees for your four-footed best friend to enjoy.

Just to the west of Norwood is another large greenway called the Forest Preserves of Cook County. There are plenty of trails and access points, so if you are tired of walking city streets, this greenway is an excellent option. Norwood also has a dog park close to the center of the community for some off-leash fun with your pup.
