Peaceful and eclectic, Ozona, FL is a real refuge for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Tampa and press "paws" on life! Formerly a fishing village and then a health retreat, this tiny coastal community sits snug on the coast of Mexico. You and your pooch can sit and watch the boats come in at the many marinas, or gaze at the ospreys nesting on almost every lamp post! There’s a real village vibe here -- downtown is only a block long, and home to a variety of interesting and locally owned businesses. Unfortunately, there are no veterinary clinics in the area, but you’ll find standard and emergency care for your buddy just a short drive away in Dunedin.

You won’t find anything in the way of off-leash adventures in Ozona, but you and your four-legged friend can still sniff out some exercise options -- the 43-mile Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail runs right through town. There’s plenty of choice in doggy dining, too. Ozona Grill, Ozona Pizza, and the more upscale Ozona Blue all welcome wagging tails at their outdoor tables. And don’t fret -- you’ll find plenty of pawesome dog parks, trails and even dog beaches just a little fur-ther afield!

Just across the water from Ozona, Honeymoon Island is a real mutts-visit. There’s an $8 entrance fee, but you and your pup might decide it’s worth it once you get to the fantastic dog beach! If your pup likes swimming, they’ll love splashing about in the shallow waters here, and owners will appreciate the fine sand and beachside views of Caldessi Island. Bags and water are provided, and there’s even a doggy shower for rinsing off all that salty spray! There’s a long trail from the park entrance to the beach that’s ideal for a warm-up walk, but stay away from the brush at the side, as snakes have been spotted in the area.
