Dog Areas in Penney Farms

Back before the Great Stock Market crash, J.C. Penney -- the same man who founded the major chain retailer -- decided to establish a farming community. It became known as Penney Farms, Florida. The stock market crash kept it from growing much, but nowadays, it is still a quiet community where you can bring your dog for a little peace and quiet away from the busy city life. It is set up to be a retirement community for ministers, which adds to its peaceful lifestyle. The layout is pretty scaled back from what was originally planned. Considering that it's so small -- only two miles total -- it doesn't have much to offer. You will want to plan on driving to a nearby city if you want to do more than walk through the city itself.

Black Creek Trail, located about eight miles away in Green Cove Springs, is part of the Rails-to-Trails conservation effort. It passes through 250 acres of wildlife area where you can see alligators, bald eagles, and other wildlife native to Florida.

While in Green Cove Springs, you and your dog can grab a bite to eat at Larry's Giant Subs. Grab your favorite custom sub, or try some new toppings. This deliciousness can be enjoyed at their dog-friendly tables, or you can take it with you when you go explore Black Creek Trail.

Fleming Island is about thirteen miles from Penney Farms. There are several dog-friendly restaurants to choose from here. One option is Island Life Grill. Bring your dog with you and grab a patio seat while you munch on Island chowder, crab cake Burgers, or even a classic burger. This Fido-friendly eatery has beer and wine as well. Most dogs are welcome as long as they are not aggressive and on a leash. You will want to bring your pup his food dish if you want to order him his own plain patty. The mouthwatering fare tastes made even better when you don't have to worry about your fur baby being left home alone!

Another great option in Fleming Island is the Taps Bar and Grill. This is the go-to place for those fruity umbrella drinks, but they also have virtually any drink that you could want. The food is always fresh and made just for you. The live music can get a little loud, so make sure that your fur baby can handle the noise before you bring her. The patio is relaxing and spacious. Please remember that you'll have to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Aggressive dogs will be asked to leave. Don't worry -- the staff doesn't mind serving your pup water when they bring you a drink.

Hurricane Grill and Wings in Fleming Island is the place to bring your dog if you want to catch the big game on the big screen. Their wings are to beg for. They have thirty -- yes, thirty! -- different flavors to choose from, from melt-your-taste-buds hot to sweet barbecue and everything in between. They do only have five dog-friendly tables out on the patio, so come early or expect to wait a little while. All dogs must be leashed and well-behaved. The staff will not serve any dogs chicken wings because they are a choking hazard for dogs.

Jacksonville, Florida is a little bit of a drive -- about thirty minutes or so -- but this muttropolis is home to a dog-friendly beach where you can play with your pup. Kathryn Abby Hanna Park is 450 acres of fun! While you do have to keep your dog on his leash, he can still join in the fun at the water park, in the lake, and on the trails. There are water fountains throughout the park for you and your dog to use. You will need to bring doggie waste bags and clean up after your dog. There is so much to do here that it is definitely worth the drive!

Confederate Dog Park in Jacksonville is worth the thirty-minute trip if you are looking for somewhere to let your dog off his leash so that he can run for a while. The park provides well-stocked waste stations that even have pooper scoopers. The water stations are clean and provide fresh drinking water for you and your pup to enjoy -- even the small dog area has its own water and cleaning stations. There are plenty of benches for when your dog has more energy than you do. The shaded areas make the perfect spot to meet with other pet parents.
