You’ve probably heard that it takes a village to raise a child, but what about a hamlet? By definition, a hamlet is a small, incorporated area that’s actually smaller than a village. Port Jefferson Station, New York is part of the city of Brookhaven, but it does have its own census. Located about an hour outside of New York City, the hamlet has been mentioned several times in the entertainment business! In Netflix’s popular series House of Cards, the area is repeatedly name-dropped in season two. The movie True Story, starring James Franco and Jonah Hill, also had some scenes shot in Port Jeff.
While this might be cool for you, we guarantee your dog won’t care either way! Luckily, the area has a dog-friendly shopping option. But what if your dog gets sick or injured? You’ll need to travel a bit outside of the village for that, and you’ll also need to travel to eat with your pup or let your dog run around in an off-leash park. Don’t fret, though; there are more than a handful of options within 20 miles of Port Jefferson Station. With so many dog-friendly activities nearby, make sure to visit Port Jefferson Station soon!

Less than a five-mile drive from Port Jefferson Station is Selden’s Boyle Road Dog Park! This popular bark park has plenty of room for your pooch to run around and socialize off-leash, and socialization is crucial to the development of your dog’s manners. While your dog gets his exercise, you can take a seat on one of the many benches. Make sure to bring water for your dog, as it can get quite hot and water isn’t provided. You’ll also want to have some waste bags on hand to clean up any messes.
Fun awaits you and Fido just five miles up the road! Laurel Ridge-Setauket Woods Nature Preserve is popular with active people of all sorts, whether you’re a mountain biker or a hiker! Just like they love it, your adventurous pooch will, too! Several trails are located throughout the park so you and Fido can find one perfect for your level of proficiency.
