Dog Areas in Portland, PA

Located on the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey in Northampton County is the quaint little town of Portland. Although the town is approximately 360 acres in size, the town's population is only 510.

Although this town is small, it is incredibly charming. The close-knit community of Portland constantly puts on events for its residents, including ugly sweater karaokes, trick or treating events and outdoor festivals. This not only helps all citizens of the city mingle and interact with each other, but it also helps pups meet other pups and make friends!

If you don't want to go to town events or walk through the scenic neighborhoods in the town, you could always head to one of the many gorgeous large forests in area, including Delaware Water Gap National Recreation, Long Pond Conservation Easement, State Gamelands 127, and Pocono Lake Preserve.

If your pooch is more of a city slicker, head into the Big Apple, where you'll find plenty of dog-friendly fun. Surprisingly, New York is not very far from Pennsylvania so if you're in the mood for a slice of pizza while your pup plays in Central Park, that is always an option. Whatever you choose, you will have a pawtastic time with your pup!

You cannot visit or live in Portland without visiting Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Although there is no dog park in the area, this vast forest has everything you could hope for. This preserved forest has plenty of hiking trails, campsites, and water sports for you and your pooch. This gigantic forest preserve is nothing short of spectacular. Just make sure you take your own food, leash, doggie poop bags, and water, since there are no amenities for dogs here. All dogs must be leashed in this park, which is for everyone's safety, as the park is huge. You're sure to have a furrific time here!

Although Long Pond Conservation Easement is a long drive from home, it is well worth it. It will take you approximately an hour to get to Long Pond, a huge nature preserve with plenty to do and see. It has many open parks, playgrounds, sports courts and fields, a pavilion and many hiking trails. Because this park is so large, you need to make sure your pooch is leashed at all times. In addition, make sure you take plenty of water, snacks and doggie poop bags. Even though this large nature preserve is far from home, your pooch will love you for making the drive!

Although Harriman State Park is in New York, it is only a short drive from Portland. This park is a little piece of heaven for those who like nature. This gigantic park has plenty to do for humans and their pooches. There are an abundance of trails for hiking, walking and running. Interestingly, there is even a four-wheeler trail in the forest. Lastly, the park also has plenty of grills where you and your family can cook up a barbecue! Just make sure you keep your pup on a leash so park rangers do not give you a ticket.

Portland is in an extremely central location. It is right next to the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey, which is only a fifteen-minute drive. The park is more than worth the quick trip! South Mountain Reservation is nearly 2,000 acres in size, complete with a pond used for fishing, sports areas, a zoo, and plenty of hiking trails. The park is very crowded most of the time, so make sure you keep your pooch on a leash at all times. Also, make sure you take your own doggie toys and plenty of doggie poop bags.

Only a short drive away from Portland is the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This national landmark is approximately twelve square miles in area with plenty of outdoor things to do and see. There are hiking trails if you want to take your pooch on a run, as well as gorgeous scenic spots to sit and watch birds with your pup. This beautiful forest preserve has something for everyone. Remember, this is a nature preserve, so don't let Fido get too friendly with the other critters that call this refuge home! Be sure to visit the preserve's official website to find an informational pamphlet on the park's wildlife.
