Located in the south of Downtown Chicago, Printers Row (or Printers House Row, as it is sometimes known) is a historic part of the city. The boundaries of the area are normally defined as Congress Parkway on its northern side, Plymouth court towards the east, Polk Street on its southern side, and the Chicago River on its western side. It makes up part of Chicago’s famous business district and downtown area known as The Loop.

To the south of Printers Row on South State Street, you have Kriser’s Natural Pet Store. It sells a range of all-natural pet food, toys, and grooming goods and is a great place to stop off if you’re in the area. Nearby, you have Burnham Park Animal Hospital which offers veterinary services. That’s about it for pet related amenities in the area, but for such a compact neighborhood, it’s great to know that it offers most of what you’ll need.

Most of this area is full of residential apartment blocks. The buildings used to be commercial properties used by the printing and publishing businesses, but in recent times, they have been converted into homes. The east of Printers Row is also home to over 3,000 students belonging to the University Center Chicago who reside in large dormitories. Therefore, in order to find any wide-open spaces to take your pooch off the leash, you’ll have to venture a little out of the neighborhood.

The area is pretty low lying, with Lake Michigan on its eastern flank and the Chicago River to the west. There are no large hills in sight, making it an easy stroll at any time of the day. It also means there are some great river view walks if you want to wander a little out of the neighborhood and the beautiful Lake Michigan is only a short walk away.

To the east of Printers Row, there is a large grassy greenway known as Grant Park. This 319-acre area houses some of the city’s most exciting attractions including beautiful formal gardens, playing fields, and a fountain area known as Buckingham Fountain.

While there are a lot of areas that feel like great places to let your dog roam wild, you may want to consider whether there are local regulations. For example, the formal gardens are curated landscapes and are not suitable for a bounding pup left to its own devices. There are also a number of playing fields and music venues which may be disrupted by your canine friend bouncing around off the leash

In Printers Row itself, there aren’t many greenways. Printers Row Park is a mostly paved area with trees and plants in landscaped flower beds. Again, while this is a nice area to kick back and enjoy some peace, it’s not really suitable for letting the pooch run wild.
