If you're a hot dog (or dog owner) hanging out in Brooklyn's Prospect Park South neighborhood, you need to make a plan for dog walking in Prospect Park. The northern section of this 526-acre urban park may have big, beautiful meadows, but the southern end, close to this neighborhood has a beautiful lake perfect for cooling off hot dogs in the summer and changing up the view from concrete city-scapes to calming water and replacing the sounds of cars with the chirping of birds.

There are a variety of trails that wind gently around the lake and even a special spot for pups, called Dog Beach, where four-legged New Yorkers can splash in the water and cool off during a hot and steamy day in the city. Prospect Park South is one of the best neighborhoods for dog walking, and your dog will be begging to head there for a walk in Prospect Park all summer long.

Prospect Park South is just minutes from one of the biggest lakes and waterways in Brooklyn. This unique habitat preserves the landscape from several hundred years ago when this area was mostly forest and farmland instead of one of the busiest places in the world. There are well-maintained bridle paths along the lake and through beautiful forests and treed habitats that are perfect for a walk after work or for a leisurely weekend stroll to relax and enjoy the landscape.

Though there isn't a designated dog park, Peninsula Meadow allows off-leash fun from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM every day. There is plenty of room for your pup to romp and play, chase a frisbee, or just feel the grass beneath his feet. There is even a dog-friendly beach that hot, city pooches can cool off in during the summer.

The Audobon Center is the best place to start many of the wonderful hikes that make their way around the park, though if you are in South Prospect Park, you can pick up the bridle trail right from your neighborhood. Exploring the Peninsula is one of the best activities you can do. If you take the half-mile walk from the Audobon Center, you can marvel at how the habitat has changed over the past three hundred years. Much of this landscape has been preserved or rehabilitated over the years and is home to many native species of wildlife and plants. You can expect to see local wildlife and hear the chirping of bird species who have called this park home for over 100 years. Be sure to keep your dog on-leash on trails and during on-leash hours. When you are playing off-leash, be sure your pup has a good recall and won't chase wildlife.
