The Lunada Canyon Trail is the perfect place to take a hike with your pup. The trail is only .95 miles long, but it gives you a beautiful view of the peninsula. After reaching the end of the hike, you can decide to go further and make it a 1.9 mile hike, or turn around and continue back the way you came for a smaller hike. If your dog isn’t up for hiking, then check out Fred Hesse Junior Community Park. This park is one of the more popular parks in the city that has a lot of open green space and a nice walking path throughout it. Your dog is more than welcome to join you in the park, just keep him on leash.

The Alta Vicente Reserve is a 55 acre stretch of land that wraps around the Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall. The reserve has a trail that takes you past the Battery Barnes bunker, which was constructed in 1942 to protect the North against the Catalina channel and held artillery for Rancho Palos Verdes. Walking the trail will give you an amazing view of the ocean. If you get hungry after your hike, check out the two eateries located right by Alta Vicente Reserve. Nelson’s Restaurant is a casual joint that serves surf and turf and is known for their desserts. Nearby, Asaka serves traditional Japanese cuisine, including sushi. Both restaurants have an outdoor patio that is dog-friendly.

The Forrestal Nature Reserve is a fun spot to take your pup for a great day of exploring and exercising. The reserve is 155-acres and has some of the best native wildlife habitats that Rancho Palos Verdes has to offer. While visiting the reserve, your dog needs to stay on leash. Be aware of the cyclists and the snakes that live on the reserve, such as rattlesnakes. The hike can get steep, so make sure your dog is well equipped for it. Also, always remember to bring fresh water to keep your dog hydrated and clean-up after your pooch. If you want to explore more, this trail connects to the Portuguese Bend Reserve.

San Pedro is ten minutes away from Rancho Palos Verdes, and is home to the Knoll Hill Off-Leash Dog Park. This dogtastic park is the perfect fenced in park to let your dog off-leash to run around and play. The park is separated by large and small breeds, which makes it easier for all dogs to have a good time. The park offers benches and chairs to sit on and a dog run to help get your dog accustomed to other dogs. Make sure to bring water and clean-up bags. About five minutes out of Rancho Palos Verdes is Rolling Hills and the George F. Canyon Preserve. This preserve is on 36-acres of nature trail, and passes through the canyons on the Peninsula. The preserve is a great place to take Fido for a fun hike, and there is even a stream that he can jump into. The trail is an easy 2-miles and mainly flat for you and your pup to enjoy. Usually frequented by horses, the trail can get busy so be aware. Remember to bring water for your dog while hiking and to always clean-up after him.
