In and around Roosevelt there are some great hiking opportunities for you and your pup! The Four Peaks portion of the Arizona Trail passes through this town. This 19 miles long section of trail is dog friendly, and passes through breathtaking desert landscape and rugged mountains. The trailhead can be found on the north side of the Roosevelt Lake Bridge. From here, it continues into the Four Peaks Wilderness all the way to Lone Pine Saddle. The trail is rated as difficult and has limited amenities, so be sure to bring plenty of drinking water and supplies. Your curious doggo needs to stay leashed in order to protect them from cacti and venomous animals.

Tonto Basin
Just 20 minutes south of Roosevelt brings you to the woofderful Tonto Basin, in the middle of the Salome Wilderness. To enjoy this vast wilderness, you and your pupper can make use of the network of trails found here. One great trail option is the Jug Trail, whose trailhead can be found on A-Cross Road. What used to be an old jeep road is now a 2 mile trail used by hikers, wildlife enthusiasts and dog walkers. The trail winds along the ridges south of Salome Mountain and descends towards Salome Creek. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their two legged friend as long as they leave no trace. If you’re looking for a place to crash after your adventures in Tonto Basin, head over to Punkin Center Lodge. They welcome two pets of any size for a small fee.

Globe City Center
Southeast of Roosevelt, is the small mining town of Globe. To learn more about Globe’s mining history, take a stroll through the Old Dominion Historic Mine Park. This park can be found in Globe’s City Center, just a 35 minute drive away from Roosevelt. You can take in information from the signs, historic structures, and antique artifacts throughout the park, or even enjoy some of the 13 trails this park has to offer. The Buffalo Butte Loop is the highest trail in the park, and offers a great vantage point to spot the surrounding mountains. This park is very welcoming to dogs, they even have a canine drinking fountain, and host an annual Dogtoberfest. Just be sure that your dog stays leashed and picked up after.

Payson City Center
A scenic, 50 minute drive south of Roosevelt brings you to the slightly larger town of Payson, and another puppy paradise! It’s in the Payson City Center that you can find the Payson Off-Leash Dog Park. The off-leash dog area is located within Rumsey Park. This dog park provides a safe environment for your dog to enjoy some off-leash freedom and pawsitive socialization. You’ll need to bring your own water, waste bags, and your dog’s favorite ball. For a unique way to explore Arizona’s beautiful landscape, head over to the town of Tortilla Flat. This town can be found about one hour west of Roosevelt, along Apache Trail. In Tortilla Flat, you can catch a ride on the Dolly Steamboat and tour Canyon Lake.
