The township of Sagamore Hills sits in Summit County, Ohio, just 16 miles southeast by car from Cleveland, and 21 miles north of Akron. It is surrounded by beautiful green spaces to enjoy with your dog, with some great hiking opportunities nearby. There is an animal hospital in town, should Fido feel a little under the weather.

The Metro Parks Bike and Hike Trail runs through Sagamore Hills, following the path of the old Akron, Bedford and Cleveland Railroad line. This paved path is a real drawcard to the area and very well looked after by Metro Parks staff and volunteers. There are two trailheads in this area, the first known as SR82 which takes you on a 3.1 mile section down to the second Sagamore Hills trailhead, Bandywine Falls, which takes you a further two miles to Boston Heights. Your pup will need to stay leashed as you walk the trail together, and always clean up after him.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park on the eastern border of Sagamore Hills is worth spending some time in, with the historic Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail running through it and numerous other trails to explore. This is a place of diverse and fascinating natural and cultural history. The Brandywine Falls are spectacular and a must-see here, with the falls reaching an impressive 65-feet at peak season. Pack sensibly, including water for you both. As this is a nature preserve, you need to keep our pup on a lead here.

With many fantastic trails and recreation sites to enjoy, you and your dog will love stopping by Sagamore Hills.

Across the Cuyahonga River is the incredible Brecksville Reservation in Brecksville. With an extensive network of trails throughout, it is worth sourcing a map online before you and your pup head out. There are trails to suit every level, from the 0.75-mile Wildflower Trail that winds along a stream valley, or the 0.5-mile Prairie Loop Trail that is a paved, flat walk that takes you through a tallgrass prairie, up to the more difficult and longer 4-mile Deer Lick Trail. This is a place of natural contrasts, from the scenic rivers edge, to prairies, to oak forests, this Reservation really is spectacular. Pack yourself a picnic and enjoy one of the many rest areas at the trailheads. Your pup will love exploring the trails with you, but keep him leashed.

Head to neighbouring Northfield for two pup-friendly places to eat. For something savory, try Wing Warehouse which not only serves its delicious namesake, but burgers, wraps, salads and an ever-changing seasonal menu. If you are craving something sweet, head to Handel’s Homemade Icecream & Yogurt. This place has a sugary indulgence for any taste, such as peanut butter and jelly, banana and pecan, mint, or maple walnut. For something really special, enjoy a drizzle of decadent chocolate sauce over the top. If you need a little walk after your meal, Pitluck Preserve is close by and is a lovely place for a walk. The pet-friendly Bike and Hike Trail runs through here as well, a popular paved multi-use path that is part of the 1,600 rail trails network throughout the country.

The Longwood Park in neighbouring Macedonia, just four miles from Sagamore Hills, is a great place to take your dog for a play and a walk. One of the largest metropolitan parks in the state, Longwood Park has a lovely pond to take a walk around, with more trails throughout the wooded areas of the park that are perfect for an on-lead stroll with your pooch. The whole family will love the playground and picnic areas, where you can hang out together, have a bite to eat and play a friendly game of catch on the open grassed areas. Bring the usual kit – a lead, drinking bowl for pup and some clean up bags.

Seven miles east of Sagamore Hills in Twinsburg is a pawriffic doggie space known as the Twinsburg Dog Park where your pup will adore some off-leash fun. Located within the 3,000-acre Liberty Park, the dedicated dog area is comprised of two fenced spaces to accommodate pups of all sizes. There are drinking bowls available, however you will need to bring your own water. Liberty Park itself has a lot more to offer as well, including a variety of walking trails such as the half-mile Bluebird Trail, 1.3 mile Coyote Run Trail or quarter-mile Maple Loop Trail which are located in the northern section of the park near the dog park. There is a well-equipped recreation area just south of these trails, with restrooms, picnic areas, a playground and shelters.
