Downtown Salida
The busy downtown area of Salida takes pride in maintaining its natural beauty. From here, you can access the lovely Monarch Spur Trail. This trail is supported by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Organization, converting retired railroads into great pathways that all can enjoy, including your canine companion! The trail starts at the Arkansas River, goes past the Loyal Dukes Dog Park, and continues to the other side of downtown. Leashed dogs are welcome, just don’t forget the waste bags, and watch out for cyclists! After working up an appetite, head over to the Moonlight Pizza and Brew Pub. Piñon Hills
Just across the Arkansas River in the east end of Salida, you can find the neighborhood of Piñon Hills. This neighborhood is home to Tenderfoot Mountain, with a giant “S” on the side of it overlooking Salida. You can drive to the top to find a lookout point via Spiral Drive, but most prefer to hike up along the dirt road. As another option, there are some mountain bike trails that zig zag up along the grassy face of the mountain. When you get to the top, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, and the town of Salida just below. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their humans! Aside from the lookout building at the top there are no amenities here, so be sure to bring lots of drinking water for you and your parched puppy!

Smeltertown
In the north end of Salida lies the vast, 21, 586 acre Browns Canyon National Monument. This conservation land is accessible from the Smeltertown neighborhood of Salida, and is proud home to many pristin canyons, rivers, and forests. The area towers over the Arkansas River, with granite walls that change hues as the sun sets. The area is very rugged and has limited development, but you and your adventure pal will love the trails and the primitive campsites. The area is also popular for fishing, and whitewater rafting. Dogs are welcome, but be sure to bring supplies! Your pup should stay leashed so as to not disturb the wildlife.

Monarch
In the west end of Salida, you can find the pretty little neighborhood of Monarch, sitting at the base of Monarch Mountain. From here, there are tons of opportunities to get deep into the great outdoors with your pup! The Waterdog Lakes Trail is a 3.6 mile hike into the San Isabel National Forest. It runs alongside a babbling stream and into an evergreen forest. There is an upper and lower lake, where you and your pup can cool off in the refreshing water. Another option to explore the mountains from Monarch is on the Monarch Scenic Tram. Your pup is free to ride the tram with you up to 12,000 feet above sea level, where your pupper can romp around in the snow!

North of Salida in the nearby town of Buena Vista, you can find another puppy paradise! It’s in the town center that you can find the Riverpark Dog Park, just a 20 minute drive away from Salida. This dog park sits adjacent to the Arkansas River and the Buena Vista Trail System. The dog park provides a safe place for your doggo to blow some steam and enjoy some pawsitive socialization. The park even has an agility course, water bowls and doggy waste bags. To continue to the adventure, why not try out some of the nearby trails?
