Allison Gap is a small unincorporated community right next to Saltville, right at the base of the mountains. The community is just a short drive from the Virginia Salt Trail, which is a multi-use trail that goes for more than eight miles down toward Glade Spring. Hungry Mother State Park

Hungry Mother State Park is a gorgeous park that is family- and dog-friendly with a 108 acre lake right in the middle of it. There is a beach and boat rental area where you can go fishing or canoeing with your best bud during the warmer months! You can rent cabins or camp out in your own tent or RV. The park rests on the site of the legend of Molly Marley and her children, who are rumoured to have wandered the area after a Native American attack on their settlement, and where their mother supposedly died before help arrived. North Shady Valley

Just 45 minutes from Saltville, just across the Virginia/Tennessee state line is the small, sleepy little town of Shady Valley. The northern end of town is home to Backbone Falls, a pupular trail. It has some steep trails with great views of local waterfalls and Beaverdam Creek running right through the middle. If you plan on visiting this tranquil trail with your pup, be sure to bring a harness to help with the tricky parts of the terrain. You will also want to have some waste bags on hand and clean behind your pet at rest areas and picnic spots.
