The suburbs are in many cases the perfect place to start a family and Shawnee, Kansas, is no exception. Over 60,000 people call Shawnee their home. The short commute to Kansas City, affordable housing prices, and clean air make this city a suburbia dreamland. Dogs are very welcome to enjoy the finer things in life too as there are plenty dog-friendly attractions in town.
The main attractions are the Shawnee Mission Park, a humongous, 1,600-acre park that is particularly well-equipped for dogs. The park has multiple hiking trails, a fascinating 120-acre lake, a 200-foot long doggy beach and an off-leash dog park that is a whopping 53 acres in size. The Shawnee Mission Park is the most visited park in the entire state of Kansas and also offers canoes, fishing boats and pedal boats at the marina.
The Swanson's Streamway Dog Park offers an alternative to the off-leash dog park in Shawnee Mission Park. This dog park is part of a dog day care facility on Woodland Drive but is available for all dogs.
Another way to enjoy the marvels of nature is to follow one of the 17 miles of trails located in the Mill Creek Streamway Park. The route starts from Nelson Island and passed through both Shawnee and Lenexa. There is a special 3-mile equestrian trail for horsemasters.
