Downtown Shepherdstown

Downtown Shepherdstown really is a mutts-visit -- the area is both lovingly preserved and thriving, full of interesting architecture, small art galleries, and locally owned coffee shops. Not only that, but many of the eateries in town welcome wagging tails with open arms! Fancy a pick-me-up? Stop in at the wonderfully named Lost Dog Coffee Fine Arts Drink Emporium! Their lattes are sure to please even the most stubborn coffee snobs, and you can check out the paintings inside before heading to their outdoor tables. If you're looking for something more substantial, try the excellent pizza at Blue Moon Cafe, which caters to canines on their tree-shaded, streamside patio.

Rumsey Monument Rd

Shepherdstown also has a more concrete claim to fame -- the town was the test site of America’s first steamboat, launched on the Potomac River by its inventor, James Rumsey. Rumsey was in discussions with George Washington about potential military uses for the boat, and at the time, Shepherdstown was just isolated enough for the engineer to conduct tests in secret. The town pays homage to Rumsey with a monument overlooking the river -- entrance is free, and your pooch is welcome as long as they're leashed! You’ll also find a short walking path with gorgeous views over the water -- you’d be barking mad not to go!

Historic Shepherdstown

If the paranormal piques your interest, why not leash up your pup and head down to German Street for the Shepherdstown Mysteries Walking Tour? Your fur-ball is welcome to join you on this ninety-minute, guided walking tour as you explore the sites of Shepherdstown’s sinister past. The tour takes in the Shepherdstown Museum, formerly the site of a dueling death, the Olde English Cemetery, supposedly haunted by the ghost of a boy named Conner, and Shepherd’s University, a former Civil War hospital. Dana, the guide, is a natural storyteller and blends local history and spooky "tails" with ease.

Burnside Bridge Rd

After all that sightseeing, your pooch might be itching for some exercise! Not to worry -- the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park is a pawfect place for you two to stretch all six of your legs, and there’s an entrance just across the state line in Sharpsburg, MD. The trail is converted from the original canal towpath and runs through some seriously scenic spots along the banks of the Potomac River, including a slice of the Green Ridge State Forest. Cultured canines might also get a kick out of passing by the original canal lockhouses, among other historic sites. Remember to bring waste bags and water!

Jefferson

Make no bones about it, a trip to Hagerstown Fairgrounds Dog Park is sure to leave your pooch one happy hound! Located in the quietly residential yet downtown-adjacent neighborhood of Jefferson, there’s enough room in both the large and small sides of the dog run for your little ball of energy to leap about to their heart’s content. As an added bonus, the park is open until 10 pm year-round and features ample lighting and a security camera, so owners can get the best for their buddy even if they’re stuck on the late shift. Bags and water are provided, so just bring your pup and prepare to play!
