Sitka City Center

The City Center of Sitka is sure to get your dogs tail wagging, because in this town, you can find Sitka’s very own dog park! The dog park is located in Turnaround Park and is designated exclusively for dog use, so your pooch can enjoy off-leash freedom in a safe environment. If you’re nervous about walking your dog out on the trails in bear country, this is a great alternative for your dog to burn some energy. Make sure your pup displays proper petiquette, and that you pick up after him or her! Just don’t forget the waste bags, drinking water, and your dog’s favourite ball. If you want to explore more of the neighborhood, check out the Sitka Cross Trail. This 4.2 mile multi-use trail runs from Sitka High School to Kramer Drive. Leashed dogs are welcome!

Hoonah

Hoonah is a small town just north of Sitka where you can find some more activities to enjoy with your pupper! This town is on the north shore of Chichagof Island, along the Icy Strait, and it’s from here you can access the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. You’ll need to take a ferry to get to this town, but the ride is an adventure in itself! Don’t forget your binoculars. The ferry allows dogs, as long as they stay in a car or in a travel carrier on the car deck. The Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve offers 3.3 million acres of rugged mountains, glaciers and rainforests. Because this area is a sanctuary for Alaskan wildlife, dogs are not allowed on the trails and backcountry. They are however, free to enjoy a few select areas including the Bartlett Cove Dock and Beach as long as they stay leashed!
