The City Center of Soldotna has plenty of greenspace to escape to! Take a short drive along Sterling Highway to get to Arc Lake and its surrounding park and trails. This lake is turned into a skating rink in the winter that you and your snow dog can slip and slide on. Amenities also include fire pits and picnic tables. From the parking lot, you can connect to the Tsalteshi Ski Trails. Here you can find over 15 miles of trails used for hiking, biking, and skiing in the winter. Leashed dogs are welcome around here, as long as they get picked up after. When it’s time for a pick me up, head over to Kaladi Brothers Coffee. They offer a variety of coffee blends that you can enjoy at one of their five outdoor dog friendly tables!

Kenai Spur Highway

It’s clear that Soldotna loves dogs, because in the Kenai Spur Highway neighborhood they’ve created their very own dog park! 3 Friends Dog Park gives playful puppers a place to run and socialize in a safe place off-leash. This park features two fenced off sections, one for small breeds and another for the big guys, and also has a water feature that acts as a drinking fountain for thirsty pups. There are waste bags available too, so don’t forget to pick up after your dog! If you’re looking for another place to take a stroll, check out Parker Park in the same neighborhood. This park features walking paths, and large open green spaces pawfect for sniffing and playing, or even a picnic. Dogs are welcome here too, as long as they stay leashed and are picked up after!

Kenai City Center

Just a small hop across the border into the neighboring town of Kenai brings you to a puppy paradise! This town has several urban parks, including the woofderful Municipal Park. This park has a variety of athletic fields, picnic shelters, washrooms and grills. There’s even a beach access trail that starts at the playground and leads to the Kenai Beach. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park and on the trail, but please do your part in keeping it clean by picking up after your pooch. If you’re looking for somewhere to crash in this town after all your adventures, check into the Kenai Airport Hotel where they welcome up to two dogs for an additional fee. Be sure to call ahead and check if there are pet friendly rooms available.

Sterling

The lovely nearby town of Sterling also has some great places you and your pup won’t want to miss! Where Moose River shoots off from the Kenai River, you can find the Izaak Walton State Park. This area is known for its excellent fly fishing, and also has a boat launch. Amenities include restrooms and picnic tables with great river views. If you want to stay a while in this area, head over to Bing’s Landing Campground. You and your tuckered out pup can crash at one of the 36 campsites after a long day of adventures. The surrounding area has trails to explore. Dogs are welcome throughout both parks and the campgrounds, as long as they stay leashed and are picked up after.

Nikiski

The town of Nikiski is about a 40 minute drive away from Soldotna, and the drive is worth it! It’s in this town that you can access the pawrific Captain Cook State Recreation Area along the Kenai Spur Highway. When you and your doggo are itching to get into the great outdoors, this is the place to go. This gem of the Kenai Peninsula is mostly undiscovered, but has gorgeous forests, streams, and saltwater beaches throughout its 3466 acres. The park also features trails, restrooms, and picnic areas. There’s a campground with 53 campsites here too! Dogs are welcome to join their two-legged friends throughout the park and campgrounds, as long as they stay leashed and get picked up after.
