The South Shore neighborhood of Chicago is home to Michelle Obama, Kanye West, and Nobel Prize winner James D. Watson, among many other brilliant minds. Along with such celebrities, South Shore offers incredible architecture and one of the longest beaches in the Greater Chicago area. It is also home to the South Shore Cultural Center which many consider one of the crown jewels of the Chicago Arts & Culture community. In recent years, the area has fallen prey to a significant downturn as more businesses closed during the recession. Crime has become a substantial issue in the area and depending on which part of the community you live, going for a walk with your dog may not be the best decision. Significant efforts are underway by community leaders and members are underway to bring in new businesses and revive the areas where vacant businesses outnumber those that are still open for business.

The terrain in South Shore is much like the rest of the area: flat and, for all intents and purposes, boring. Single and multi-family homes are tightly packed into blocks with little room between them. Most of the residential streets offer tree-lined sidewalks for those brave enough to go out for a stroll. There are a number of parks to take your pup to, all of which are pet-friendly as long as you keep your dog on a leash and clean up any mess they make. Of course, if you and your pup need something a little more challenging, there are several miles of sandy beach and Lake Michigan to walk along. Playing in the water is an excellent form of exercise. The best way to keep you and your pup from becoming bored with your walks is to do your best to vary them up on a daily basis.

South Shore has a large number of small community parks for the two of you to go walking in. To the north of the town sits the South Shore Golf Course and the Jackson Park Golf Course, both of which have green spaces that are not explicitly part of the course where you might be able to take your pooch for a walk. Of course, there is Jackson Park and many other areas of greenery before you reach the beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan.

One of the most popular parks along the lakeshore is Rainbow Beach Park which offers tennis courts, baseball fields, and acres of grass and trails for you and your puppy to explore. Of course, when you get tired of all that grass, you can always go for a walk on the beach, engage in a little beach frisbee, and then hop into the cool, clean waters of Lake Michigan to cool off.
