While you are exploring the trails, seek out the rock formation known as the ‘Devil’s Tea Table’, as well as the old saw mill and a natural spring. Dunbar
Dunbar’s City Park covers 40 acres of green
space and is just 3.4 miles west of South Charleston centre. This free park has
paved paths to take an on-lead walk with your buddy and plenty of benches and
picnic shelters for a rest or spot of lunch, as well as large shady trees to relax
under when the weather is warm. The kids will love the playground and the
expanse of grass for a game of catch or Frisbee with your dog. This
pet-friendly park has pet waste stations provided on the grounds. Restrooms are
provided here and there is ample parking close to the playground area.

Fort Hill
The Danner Meadow Park in Charleston is a 4.5 mile
drive west of South Charleston and another beautiful green space to visit with
your dog. This leafy park is well maintained and has lots of amenities to enjoy,
including picnic tables, a large playground, restrooms and an athletic field.
Your pup will love taking a walk on the paved looped track with you, with
exercise stations along the way should you wish to throw in a little workout. As
this is a relatively small public park, you will need to keep your pet leashed
for his safety and the comfort of other patrons, and bring some doggie waste
disposal bags here.

North Dunbar
Step back in time with a visit to the Wine Cellar Park in nearby Dunbar, 4.7 miles north west of South Charleston. Seek out the old stone wine cellars, built around 1860 during the height of the area’s wine industry but long abandoned. They have been restored over time and are now a popular attraction for the area. This park also has beautiful nature trails to walk with your pooch and a creek to explore, as well as picnic groves to set down for a rest and a bite to eat. Bring bug spray here in the warmer weather, especially if you are heading down to the water, and keep your pet leashed.

Five miles west of South Charleston is the Shawnee Regional Park in Dunbar, a 127-acre green space that is definitely worth a visit while you are in the area. Your dog will enjoy a walk along the paved path with you to get in a bit of exercise together, or head down to the creek for some exploring (bring bug spray in the warmer weather!).
