Laurel Springs is a small rural community near Sparta that is home to the pup-friendly, 750-acre New River State Park. The park is accessible at four areas: Wagoner Road, US 221, Kings Creek, and Alleghany County Access Area. Parking is available at all but the Alleghany Access, which can be reached only by canoe. Each access area also includes picnic facilities, two with shelters, grills, and fireplaces. Campsites in the park feature primitive, walk-in or canoe-in camping and Fido is welcome. The trails along the river and through open fields to the nearby hills offer furtastic views of woodlands and native flora like rhododendrons, and the wildlife here is abundant. Arf! Roaring Gap
Roaring Gap is a neighbor of Sparta, and home of the pup-friendly Stone Mountain State Park, which features a massive granite dome at the summit. This serves as a landmark for some as they hike the park’s trails, and a challenge for others who dream of climbing the huge rock. The park offers more than 18 miles of trails for hiking, and a 90-site campground equipped for RVs and tents. Tent pads, tables, and grills adorn each site, and some have hookups for water and electricity. The trails vary in difficulty, and feature waterfalls and some rocky terrain, not to mention scurrying wildlife and birds. Fido must be leashed within the park. Day picnickers and overnighters will find the 75 picnic sites convenient and scenic, and two shelters feature grills, water, and restrooms. Streams covering over 20 miles crisscross the park, and are open for fishing, cooling off or just watching and listening as they gurgle by. This is a pawrfect destination for you and your fur-bud to explore!

Mulberry
This village south of Sparta is where you’ll find Doughton Park and its campground, easily accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 7,000-acre park is full of doglightful things to do with your pup, including spotting wildlife like bobcats, foxes, and deer, and hiking six moderate to strenuous trails that traverse meadows and lead to furtastic scenic overlooks with the Blue Ridge Mountains all around you. Camping is available by reservation or on a first-come basis at the park’s campground, that also features another 30 miles of trail along bluegrass cliffs. With many amenities, the campground will serve as a comfy and safe home while you explore! Be sure to keep Fido leashed within park boundaries. Arf!

This community is a few miles east of Sparta and home to the dog-friendly Cumberland Knob Recreation Area, known for its pawsome hiking trails. Conveniently located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, trails range from the easy one-half mile Cumberland Knob Trail that features a picnic area and gentle elevation, to the 2-mile Gully Creek Trail which loops around the park, over Gully Creek and back to the parking lot. A concession stand in the parking area provides sustenance, and there are restrooms as well. A shelter in an elbow of the Cumberland Knob Trail provides refuge from both rain showers and hot sun!
