Spearfish is located in Lawrence County, South Dakota. When the 1876 Black Hills Gold Rush hit, Spearfish became a hopping supply town for the miners that set up camp in Spearfish Canyon. Today, its close proximity to the Black Hills makes it a nature lover’s paradise. Spearfish also has three local veterinary clinics that keep the resident pups in tip top shape.

When visiting Spearfish, you’ll have a wide variety of pet friendly places to stay. If your pup prefers a cozy room to a campsite, make a reservation at Days Inn, Best Western, or Holiday Inn. But if he likes to ruff it, stay at Chris’s Campground or Spearfish KOA.

If your dog loves parks, Spearfish is the place to be. With over a dozen parks at the tips of her paws, your pup won’t know where to start. Grab her leash and head over to Jorgensen Park, a pawsome 15 acre park right on the banks of Spearfish River. Walk around the grassy area before setting off on the Spearfish Recreation Trail.

Be sure to also check out Spearfish City Park. Trees, paved walk ways, and large grassy areas make this a favorite for local canines.

With so many parks, it’s no wonder Spearfish pups love calling this place home!

The Spearfish Dog Park is where all the cool canines hang out. This fenced in area gives your pup a place to let loose and run wild. He can dash around the grassy field in a game of chase, or roll and wrestle with his new playmates. Petite pooches can enjoy the park at their own pace in a separate area. A couple benches and picnic tables are available for pet parents, so sit back and relax as your pal gets tuckered out. Be sure to bring your own water and bowl- he’ll be thirsty after playing so hard.

If your pup is itching to get outside, take her over to Lookout Mountain Park. As the name suggests, Lookout Mountain is the star of the show in this park. Pack some water, snacks, and a leash, and make your way up its slope. If you want to reach the summit, stay on the main mowed trail. The hike to the top is about four miles, and once you get there, the view is unparalleled. There are also several spur trails that will allow you to create your own adventure. Since rattlesnakes also call this hill home, be sure to keep your dog on the trail.

You can’t come to Spearfish without exploring the Black Hills. Lace up your hiking boots, pack some water, grab a leash, then head over to Tinton Trail to get started. Delve in to the forests and ferns with your four legged hiking buddy by your side. The main trail is about eight miles, but there is a short 2 mile loop also available. Another option is the Big Hill Trail System. This network of trails weaves through open meadows, ponderosa pine, and aspen trees. Chances are you will come across mountain bikers enjoying the trails, so keep your pup nearby and leashed.

One of the area’s prettiest hikes can be found in the small community of Savoy. Located in Spearfish Canyon, Roughlock Falls Trail is about a 25 minute drive from Spearfish. Your furry BFF will love hiking on this lush trail. It meanders along Little Spearfish Creek and guides you past ponds, rapids, and marshes. The final destination is a boardwalk overlook that gives you a stunning view of the Falls. The refreshing mist will cool your pal off and get her refreshed and ready for the hike back to the car.  It’s about 4 miles roundtrip, so she will get plenty of exercise.

Eagle Cliff Trails are situated in Lead, about 45 minutes south of Spearfish. This isn’t just one trail; it is 21 intertwining loops and spur trails. During the winter this trail network is used for cross country skiing. But in the summer, it’s for hiking and having a puptastic time. Your canine companion can help create your own route as you explore the different paths. The longest single loop is 3.7 miles and the shortest is .2 miles. Some of the loops can be pretty steep, so be sure to choose one that matches your dog’s needs.  Don’t forget to bring water, as all that hiking will make your pup thirsty!
