Walking through St. Francis Wood with your dog is absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous old homes are set well back from the sidewalk on large lots. Huge mature trees tower over the road on both sides, creating a lovely shaded walk that is pleasant on hot San Francisco days. Gently sloping streets offer glimpses of beautiful views of the cityscape. This is a wonderful neighborhood to walk with your dog on a loose leash.

For variety from the neighborhood streets, you can go to the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove. This thickly forested area offers plenty of shade on hot days and the Stern Grove Dog Park will let your dog run around off-leash. The large grassy area in the midst of the trees is a great place to play a game of fetch while the cute little pond called the Pine Lake is a lovely place to let your pup experience water for the first time.

Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove is right across the street from St. Francis Wood and provides an extensive old forest for you and your dog to enjoy. Pine Lake is a great place to stroll around and offers the opportunity to see wildlife.

Several blocks further west from the perimeter, you will find the lower Great Highway Trail which runs along the Ocean Beach State Beach. This trail is a perfect place to bicycle with your dog and the beach is a wonderful destination for a swim on a hot San Francisco day. For something different, Mount Davidson is just west of St. Francis Wood. This little mountain is thickly covered in forest, making for a beautiful and interesting hike.

Further west, the Glen Canyon Park has lots of thick tree cover in the valley as well as a difficult-to-navigate trail along the steep wall of the canyon to challenge your pup on some rocky terrain.
