Dog Areas in Startup

Startup is a census-designated area along the Wallace River in Washington. With only 676 residents in 2010, Startup is really living up to its name! It doesn’t get much more natural than this. Though close to several larger cities like Sultan and Lake Stevens, Startup is still finding its legs. It’s a great place to visit if you’re passing through, and residents agree that Startup is already running fine! You can “pup” right over to nearby Sultan to visit a vet if anything goes wrong. Barring misfortune, however, you can stay in Startup and enjoy the Alpine Village Drive-In, where outdoor, dog-friendly seating is paired with gourmet speciality burgers.

You can also taste-test Startups rival burger joints head to head by trying Vick’s Burger Shack. Your dog can vote as well as he can also join you outside at Vick’s Burger Shack (though if you sneak him some people food, odds are good the votes will be tied at “wagging tail” for both places!) Water bowls are provided upon request.

If you want to drive, Startup makes a great base camp before heading out to explore Wallace Falls State Park (a mere 15 minute drive away.) Whether you want to eat or explore, Startup is the place to do it.

When dogs in Startup need to run wild, they head over to the Dogs on First in Osprey Park. This off leash dog park is located just three miles west in the nearby town of Sultan. Your pup will love the chance to let loose and burn her extra energy.  She can romp and play with new friends, or tear around in a game of chase. For a change of pace, take a stroll around Osprey Park. This park sits right on the banks of the Skykomish River and is full to the brim with trees. If she needs to cool off, let your pooch dip her paws in the water.

Looking for some adventure? Pack up your pooch and head five miles northeast of Startup to Wallace Falls State Park. This pup-ular park is located in Gold Bar and displays the lush landscape Washington is famous for.  Follow the trail to the rushing waters of Wallace Falls and the amazing views of the Skykomish River Valley. The main trail gains 1,300 feet in elevation through a series of switchbacks. If your pup isn’t up for the climb, Lower and Middle Falls stops are available and are just as beautiful. Due to the heavy foot traffic and dangerous falls, leash laws are strictly enforced. So be sure to keep your dog leashed at all times.

Is your dog aching to get out in nature? Head over to East Gold Bar for some pupperific hiking. Just 10 miles east of Startup you’ll find the trailhead for Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls. The entire round trip clocks in at 8.2 miles. The last mile and a half is quite steep, so make sure your pup is in for the long haul. If he’s not, just go as long as his paws can take, as you’ll still get plenty of stunning scenery in this lush deciduous forest. If you happen to be there in mid-June, be on the lookout for ripe salmonberries. No matter when you go, your pooch will have a fetching good time!

This 90 acre park is a peninsula surrounded by the Skykomish River and Woods Creek, and the 1.2 mile network of gravel trails weaves in and out of the woods. If your pooch needs some off leash time, pay a visit to Wiggly Field, Monroe’s 2.5 acre dog park. Your pup can race around the agility equipment or stop by the faux fire hydrant. Trees and a covered shelter provide shade for human and pups during the dog days of summer.

This pup-ular hike is five miles round trip, so your pal is sure to get some good exercise. You’ll have to pass through a few creeks, so be prepared to get your feet wet. A 25 foot waterfall is the final destination. It plunges into a large pool that is perfect for cooling off. Your pup can dip her paws in or splash around to her heart’s content. Sounds like a woofin’ good time!
