Perched atop the 2,000-foot Pilot Mountain, the park has amazing overlooks in every direction. Though steep, a 6.5-mile trail corridor connects the mountaintop park to parkland on the Yadkin River down below. If boating seems more tempting than climbing, consider the canoe-in camping sites along the river. On your way home, stop in King for a delightfully “retro” dining experience: the walk-up window at the Dairi-O. You’ll feel like you’re back in the ‘60s sharing some delicious soft-serve with Rover at the sidewalk seating.

Germanton
The Winston-Salem suburb of Germanton is a mere 11 miles from Tobaccoville on the eastern side of the city, and the Happy Hounds Dog Park at Horizons Park makes it well worth the drive. The park offers separate play areas for large and small dogs, a waste station, and a water fountain-bowl for drinking and maybe a little recreational splashing. For something different, stop for sushi on the patio at Kimono Japanese Restaurant as you pass by US Hwy 52 on your way home. Keep an eye on the wasabi; just because Fido would eat it doesn’t mean he should.

Less than 15 miles away, Downtown Winston-Salem is still small enough to be navigable but bustling and hip enough to satisfy even the most sophisticated pups. On the West End, near Old Salem, Washington Park’s off-leash dog park is a must-visit on any trip into town. If he was a very good boy at the park, you might even consider stopping by the K-9 Doggie Bakery and Boutique for some provisions or a new look. Then, see what’s on the tasting taps at Wise Man Brewing, where you and your fur family can snack from the food trucks and sample micro-brews on the patio. Nearby, The Quiet Pint has dog-friendly dinner and drinks on a giant covered patio with fans: perfect for hot summer nights.

Hanging Rock
Danbury, NC is 19 miles northeast of Tobaccoville and the gateway to Hanging Rock State Park, so grab the leashes, waste bags, and water bottles and head for the hills. Though it’s a 20-mile trip from Tobaccoville, the eastern Winston-Salem community of Kernersville is worth a visit. Kernersville also has 7 dog-friendly restaurants, including some unusually fancy options. The lovely porch at the Spanish-inspired Bistro B and Wine Bar offers refined small-plate dining in a setting that welcomes your pup (who prefers a large plate, please.)
