Union is a happening city, and a center for business, higher education, and recreation. People and their dogs thrive in a place where so much is dedicated to good living. The town has seven veterinary clinics that keep dogs healthy and can help in any emergency situation. Union has also dedicated considerable space and resources in creating clean and safe parks and places for people and their dogs to exercise and have some fun. Twenty-one parks of varying sizes are scattered throughout the neighborhoods of  Union. Four of the parks have paved walking trails that are accessible. More than half of the parks have picnic tables. A good number, too, have reservable amenities, like pavilions for larger outdoor parties.

For some dog-friendly dining, a person and pup may want to sample some of the food at Van Gogh’s Ear Cafe. The food is described as a “retro-American” style cuisine, but the old world charm combined with the offbeat name captures some of the vitality of the the city. The outdoor tables make for comfortable dining for a person and their furry friend. An outdoor adventure is a short drive out of the city limits to nearby Union County Watchung Reservation. This 2,200-acre nature preserve has many hikes ranging from easy to more challenging. Leashed dogs may enjoy scenery with their person or sit awhile beside the lapping current of the river.
