Curled into the bank of the Mississippi River right across from the Louisiana state line, it’s hard to know where to begin talking about Vicksburg, MS. The only city in Warren County has many claims to fame -- Coca-Cola was first brewed here, the town is well-known for its Mississippi Delta Blues music, and it was subject to a notorious forty-seven-day siege during the Civil War. Vicksburg still bears some scars from the latter -- the Cedar Mansion Inn and Restaurant has a cannonball stuck in one of its front walls. You and your pooch can take a look at it while you sample some of their old-style southern cooking on the porch!

These days, though, Vicksburg is becoming noted for its small but thriving arts scene. The past meets the present in the city’s historic downtown, where painstakingly preserved architecture sits next to contemporary and folk art galleries.

Vicksburg prides itself on its southern hospitality, and that warm welcome definitely extends to your furry friend. The city has its own dog park, as well as some pawesome options for leashed walks. No matter how long or short your stay here, you and your pooch are sure to find something of interest in Vicksburg!

Vicksburg’s recently opened dog park is a real mutts-visit! Located right by the airport in the city’s residential Redbone/Jeff Davis neighborhood, this park has everything a pup needs. There’s a separate area for small dogs, so your pooch can play and socialize no matter their size, and bags and water are provided. Vicksburg Dog Park might not be the largest, but there’s still plenty of room for your furry friend to run free here! Careful, though -- the park’s drainage isn’t great, and it can get quite muddy after it rains. You might want to bring a towel for post-play cleanup.

It’d be a real faux-paw to visit Vicksburg without checking out Catfish Row Art Park! This hidden gem is tucked away in Vicksburg’s urban Levee Street area. The park layout is designed for kids, and non-furry family members are sure to enjoy the playground and splash pad, while adults might like to have a look at the floodwall murals and butterfly garden. Be sure to bring bags and water! This neighborhood is also home to a whole host of doggy dining options -- consider stopping in at The Wine House for a grrrreat glass of red and a delicious shrimp po’boy at one of their outdoor tables.

If tales of the paranormal pique your interest, why not head on down to Vicksburg’s central Grove Street Mid-Section neighborhood and take in a ghost tour? Vicksburg is widely held to be one of the most haunted cities in the South, and the furrific Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Walk will fill you and your leashed pooch in on the spookier side of the area’s history. You two can learn all about the fallout from antebellum duels, and you'll also want to check out the spirit-filled McRaven House! The tour takes about ninety minutes, and it’s best to book in advance if you're bringing your pup.

If you and your fur-baby are looking for a little variety in your off-leash activities, why not take the drive to Jackson and check out Bree’s Bark Park? Located near Jackson’s north-western Presidential Hills neighborhood, this park might be a ways away from Vicksburg, but make no bones about it, once your pup gets through those double gates, you’ll be happy you made the trip! There’s plenty of room to romp in both the small and large dog areas, and bags and water are provided. That’s not all, though -- the park features doggy agility equipment for that extra bit of canine cardio, as well as a splash pool to cool down in.

Hound-dog history buffs might get a kick out of a visit to Vicksburg’s National Military Park! Your buddy won’t be able to visit the gunboat museum, but you two can still wander around the monuments and look at the informative plaques at the battle sites, and leashed pups are welcome at the cemetery. The 1,800-acre park is also a pretty pawpular spot with local dog owners! You’ll find several hiking trails here to sniff and explore, but not all of them are shaded, so you might want to give this park a miss on a hot summer day. Don’t fur-get to bring bags and water!
