Pahoa Town Center
In the town center neighborhood of the nearby town of Pahoa, you can gain access the Kahaualea Forest Reserve from Uakoko Road. This forest reserve has unique scenery to enjoy and is just a 20 minute drive away from Volcano. This reserve has gravel and dirt paths that take you deep into the tropical wilderness. Depending on the temperature and the time of day, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the steam vents in the forest. There are restrooms available at the visitors center. For some ocean views, head over to Kaimu Beach Park in the same neighborhood. Here you can walk along the dried lava landscape while watching the waves crash against the rocks. The ocean is rough in this area, so swimming is not recommended. Dogs are welcome in all of these areas as long as they stay leashed and are picked up after.

This reserve is just under an hour from Volcano, and is comprised of approximately 64,000 acres of public land. From here, you can enjoy some of the many hikes, including the very easy and scenic Kaumana Trail. In this reserve, you can even look straight up the eastern slope of the Mauna Kea volcano. The weather in this mountainous region is often unpredictable, and there are no amenities in this park so come prepared!
