Wasilla City Center

The Bumpus Recreation Area is a great place to spend some quality time with your favorite furry friend. With baseball, softball, and soccer fields, this park is a sports lover’s dream. When the fields are not in use by local teams, the public is welcome to use them. If your pooch loves to feel the grass beneath his paws, he’ll feel right at home as he wanders around the open fields. For a more structured walk, follow the path that circles the fields. It even passes through the surrounding woods, so your dog will get a little taste of nature.

If your dog is bursting with energy, it’s time for a visit to the Lake Lucile Dog Park. This fenced area is located at the entrance of Lake Lucile Park. Your pal can ditch her leash and run herself ragged. She’ll meet new friends and have a chance to practice her socialization manners. During the summer months, fresh water is available for the furry park visitors. If you come in winter, bring some water for your puppy dog. When she’s finished playing, clip on her leash and walk around the park for a cool down. Thick forests of birch, spruce, and cottonwood add to the Lake’s natural beauty.

Gateway

This area is home to some furrific hikes. Since it is located in the neighboring town of Palmer, it’s just a quick 15 minute drive from Wasilla. Load up your pooch and make your way over to the Mat-Su College Trailhead. This hilly two mile loop will give your canine companion a great leg workout. Be sure to stop and take in the views of Lazy Mountain, Knik Glacier, and Twin Peaks. Snodgrass Hall Trailhead is the companion to Mat-Su College Trail. This flat trail has an overlook perfect for viewing the surrounding peaks. Another option is the four mile Matanuska Lake Trail. It’s also flat and passes through gorgeous landscape.
