Tucked on the banks of the Tuolumne River between Turlock and Modesto, Waterford, CA is as laid-back as it is quiet. Established in the nineteenth century, Waterford is one of a surprising number of towns in the area that ended up changing names as a result of misdirected mail. The settlement was originally named Bakersville, but citizen’s parcels and letters kept ending up in nearby Bakersfield. The new title was chosen because the town was the site of an important crossing point on the river, making Waterford a bustling trade hub. These days, though, Waterford is mostly known as a sleepy, community-oriented commuter town, and as a great place to raise a family.

Waterford doesn’t have its own dog park, but it’s still a pretty fur-friendly place! You and your buddy won’t lack for exercise options -- the town has a couple of pawesome parks that are ideal for a leashed walk. Beard Park, in particular, is a favorite of local doggos and their owners. If you and your pooch like hiking, you’re in luck -- Waterford is known as "The Gateway to Recreation" for its proximity to natural wonder, and Yosemite National Park is just an hour away. And if your furry friend needs to run free, don’t fret -- you’ll find some furrific dog parks in the surrounding area!

With a green space like River Park on your doorstep, you’d be barking mad not to check it out! Right on the edge of Waterford’s calm and residential River Pointe neighborhood, the park is pretty pawpular with local pooches and owners. It’s easy to see why -- River Park is home to Waterford’s very own section of the River Trail, which winds its way for two miles past lush grassland along the serene Tuolumne. The walk is mostly flat, but be careful -- as Waterford sits on a bluff, there’s a steep staircase leading down to the trail itself. Be sure to bring waste bags and water!

Just a thirteen-mile drive from Waterford, Modesto has the distinction of being one of the few Californian cities with a compact and walkable downtown. Though you’ll find some interesting architecture here, Modesto isn’t as pretty as it once was -- many historic buildings fell victim to an urban "regeneration" campaign in the '70s. You and your pooch shouldn’t get too "melan-collie" about that, though -- downtown Modesto is also home to an entrance to the Dry Creek Trail, a gorgeous eight mile stretch that passes through several wonderful wooded parks. Hungry? Consider stopping in at Harvest Moon, an amazing homestyle food joint that caters to canines outside.

Oakdale’s Vineyard neighborhood is eclectic and charming, featuring a patchwork of homes from all styles and time periods. Not only that, but it’s a haven for hound owners! Vineyard is home to the Oakdale Dog Park, a mutts-visit off-leash area on the edge of the city. The park is huge -- there’s plenty of room in both the large and small dog areas for even the most hyperactive doggo to leap about to their heart’s content. Bags and water are provided, so just bring your pup and prepare to play! Afterward, why not chow down at Papapolloni Mediterranean Bistro? Their shrimp and avocado is excellent, and doggy diners are welcome outdoors.

Nature-loving pooches will get a new "leash" on life after a trip to Turlock State Recreation Area! Right on the edge of Turlock where suburban meets wilderness, this pawsitively beautiful preserve is a water-loving pup’s paradise -- your furry friend is sure to have a whale of a time splashing about in the river! They’ll need to be leashed, though, so consider bringing a longline. There’s also miles upon miles of trails to sniff and explore, running through natural forest and boasting fabulous views of the lake. Careful though -- the trails are popular with mountain bikers, so watch out for speeding cyclists!

Turlock’s Canal Drive neighborhood is just a fourteen-mile drive from Waterford, and the pawfect dog run in Sunnyview Park certainly makes the trip worth it! Like the park in Oakdale, Sunnyview has a separate small dog area, so your pooch can play and socialize no matter their size. There’s plenty of space here, too, and the off-leash area is well shaded by mature trees, so you can let your pup run around and burn off their excess energy without worrying about them overheating. Bags are provided, but there’s no water fountain -- you’ll need to bring your own bottle.
