If you are down for a car ride, jump in and head 22 miles to Farmington River Trail. Fido will absolutely bark about all the great things that Rails-to-Trails have done for this area. Each part of the trail system is perfectly scenic as it races in and out of the wooded areas. Even in the summer, you will find these walkways to be cool and relaxing. The Farmington River Trail encompasses over 20 miles of trails that are paved and waiting for you to grab your leashed dog and explore. It is historic and scenic area made better by the Rails-to-Trails system.
Peterson Park & Mattatuck Trail is a quick 18-mile trip from West Torrington, and the perfect getaway for the entire family. You’ll love the picnic areas, which are the pawfect place to enjoy a picnic. There’s a skate park for your teenagers to enjoy, and a jungle gym system for your smaller tots. Grab your leash and explore the trail systems as the wind through each other. If you get too hot, cool off in the shallow brook that runs through the park. It is the pawfect way to spend the day out of the house and with your family, no matter what the weather is.
Clatter Valley Park is a quick car ride of about 25 miles, but it will make you feel like you are getting back to your roots. There is plenty of open space to run free in. Don’t forget to grab Fido’s ball so that you and your dog can play fetch. If you feel like going for a splash, there is a nice little river that is the pawfect place for Fido to get his paws wet. Sunshine and fresh air are just a few things that none of us get enough of, so come on and have fun in nature at Clatter Valley Park! This will soon be one of your favorite spots!
When you need a classic dog park, something built just for Fido, 30 miles is not too far to drive. Cheshire Dog Park is calling Fido’s name. It has agility equipment which can help your dog get in shape and show off his skills. There are two areas so that smaller pups can get away from the big boys and just run and play. Cleaning stations and shaded spots to sit are aplenty in this park! There are also watering holes for you and your dog to stay hydrated while you play together. This is the pawfect space to let your dog do what he does best!
Just 17 miles from West Torrington lies Birge Pond-Hoppers Preserve. If this park could be described in one word, it would be open. This is an off-leash area that is set up just for Fido to run and play with you. This open meadow has many walking trails leading off it for you and Fido to explore. These are all off-leash trails that are the pawfect way to spend the day with your dog. Fido can also play in the pond when he works up a good pant.
