Winneconna Parkway is located in the southern region of Chicago. Originally, this community was created for residents who could not afford lakefront property but desired a waterfront home and view. Winneconna Parkway was developed with the lagoon to create 'waterfront' residential living. The area is primarily residential. However, there's a small commercial area on the southeast corner of the community that has some shops, restaurants, and services and is easily accessible for residents of Winneconna Parkway to reach on foot.

Because this neighborhood is located inland a distance from Lake Michigan, weather can be extreme. Spring is often rainy and there may even be severe thunderstorms. Check weather forecast and warnings before venturing far from home on foot with your dog. Winters can be frigid with temperatures falling below freezing so you will need warm outerwear and if you have a short haired dog, he may benefit from a winter dog coat and boots too!

The Winneconna Parkway is sometimes called 'Chicago's Venice' with beautiful Victorian style two-story homes overlooking the lagoon and stone bridges crossing the waterway. Most of the homes in the area are single-family residences but there are some low rise apartments. Houses and apartment buildings exhibit Victorian architecture and there are large properties with lawns, trees, and gardens. Some lots in the community are undeveloped and some homes currently unoccupied and untended. Most streets have separate sidewalks but a few access roads don't have separate pedestrian ways, so be cautious when traveling on foot in these areas and walk with your dog securely leashed. There are elevated train tracks on the western side of Winneconna Parkway with underpasses allowing vehicles and pedestrians to safely cross underneath to adjacent communities in the west. Winneconna Parkway is not a large area and is flat and easily traversable for pedestrians and puppies of all ability levels.

The Winneconna Parkway surrounds the Auburn Park Lagoon. This water body and associated green space is 8 acres in size and stretches across three city blocks. There are winding paths around the edge of the lagoon and stone bridges that allow pedestrians and their dogs to safely cross the water. Auburn Park is a quiet park with pedestrian paths, open lawns, and picnic areas. Dogs should remain on a leash. The lagoon is stocked with fish and many locals and visitors do their fishing here. Keep your dog away from people so he does not become entangled in fishing lines or end up being hooked with a fish hook. Be careful in late fall, winter, and early spring with your dog around the lagoon. Shallow water bodies do not freeze evenly and dogs that venture out on thin ice are liable to fall through. Prevent accidents by keeping your dog off the lagoon if unstable ice is present.
