Jefferson Park is on the south side of Los Angeles and started out as one of the wealthiest areas of Los Angeles. Many of the beautiful homes that were built during that time still exist within this diverse area of working middle-class residents. There are not any pet stores in the immediate area, but you will find a veterinarian close by while north of the Santa Monica Freeway, you will find a nice selection of pet stores, veterinarians, and groomers. While mainly a residential area, there are a fair number of restaurants and small stores where snacks and drinks can be purchased especially along the outskirts of the neighborhood along W. Jefferson Blvd and Crenshaw Blvd.

Weather is rarely a problem for Los Angeles walkers as the climate is temperate with an average temperature of 64 degrees all year around. Heavy rains and winds do occur but they are usually only a nuisance and do not last.

While much of the region is flat, there is a ridge of hills that run through the neighborhood from east to west. You and your four-footed best friend will have the opportunity to choose from flat terrain or a mix of hilly and flat to spice up your workout a bit. If exercise is your goal, head to Adams Blvd. where the terrain starts to change. Many of the elevation changes are quite gradual, making it a great way to get your heart rate up. A mix of trees and grass will greet you along many of the side streets, but much of the walking will be done on concrete. If a few patches of grass and trees do not suit your aspirations for a great walk, then you may want to search out a few of the greenways in the area surrounding Jefferson Park for something a little more suited to your tastes.

Your choices for available greenways in Jefferson Park are pretty limited. The Benny H. Potter West Park is one of your best options as it has sizeable areas of lawns and trees as well as a nice playground. The Leslie N. Shaw Park is very small and only has a bit of grass but makes a nice place to take a break if your dog needs a drink and a bit of shade.

If you really want to enjoy some greenery and dirt under your feet, your best option is to head over to the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area and Norman Houston Park which is about 5 miles west and south of the neighborhood. There is an entrance fee on weekends, but this 338-acre park offers a multitude of challenging trails for you and Dozer to explore as well as amazing views. It is one of the largest parks in the Los Angeles intercity area.
