Mount Washington is in northeast Los Angeles in the San Rafael Hills. This is a historic area that was founded in the early 1900s. One of the steepest streets in Los Angeles is found in this neighborhood on Eldred Street. This neighborhood was created by the developer Robert Marsh who also built the Mount Washington hotel within the area.

This hilly neighborhood is primarily residential with some businesses clustered along Marmion Way. The terrain alternates between buildable area and land that is too rough to be developed, so walking through Mount Washington, you will often find natural areas among the houses which can make for a very pleasant walk. The north part of the neighborhood around Mount Washington Drive is especially hilly and natural. Dog training facilities are available in the area, as well as grooming establishments that can have your dog looking their best. For pet owners, there are plenty of options.

The terrain of Mount Washington is hilly, with many areas being too steep for development. Walking your dog down these neighborhood streets provides all sorts of opportunity to test her footing and have some adventure in your everyday walk. Streets tend to be very narrow, often only wide enough for one car to pass, so you will need to be very careful to be aware of oncoming traffic.

Many paths are dirt or alternate between dirt and concrete, so you will need to feel very confident if you are going to chance this steep terrain. A good mountain bike is a good way to go and can provide you and your dog with hours of fun. Climbing steep inclines can be a great way to wear your pup out, but be careful that they do not overexert themselves. Dogs with knee or hip problems especially need to be careful when climbing steep inclines.

Mount Washington has lots of wilderness area throughout the neighborhood due to the variable inclines and areas that are not easy to build on. If you are up for a climb, you and your dog will find plenty of areas to explore throughout the area, especially around the outskirts of it. This wilderness extends past the perimeters of Mount Washington into surrounding neighborhoods as well.

If you enjoy a steep, mountainous hike, your exploration opportunities are nearly unlimited in this neighborhood. Be careful as you explore that you do not end up wandering into somebody's backyard, as private property can creep up on you suddenly.

If you want more natural exploration and a preserved wildlife area, the Elyria Canyon Park just north of Mount Washington has natural terrain on a more equal plane so that you and your dog can stroll instead of hike on your nature walk. Just remember to obey leash laws in the area.
