Pico Union is bounded by Olympic Boulevard on the north, the Harbor Freeway on the east, the Santa Monica Freeway on the south, and Hoover Street on the west. These two freeways and main roads along with the main thoroughfares cutting through the community in all directions mean that on foot travel in this neighborhood will encounter plenty of traffic and busy roads require crossing at designated pedestrian crossings.

Although there are many single family homes in this neighborhood, walk up apartments, complexes, and condominiums are found on most residential streets. The area has some inclines, although it is not particularly hilly, and roads are relatively level. This well-developed community has sidewalks for pedestrians and residential properties are often on higher ground than street level with retaining walls along walkways. Natural landscaping in this central urban neighborhood is not as prevalent as in some Los Angeles neighborhoods, however, most residential properties have trees, maintained lawns, and gardens.

Toberman Park features indoor recreational facilities and provides barbecue pits and picnic tables with trees and green spaces to enjoy with your pooch. Pico Union Vest Pocket Park has a children's playground and picnic tables, trees, and lawns.

Residents looking for long greenways to hike with their dogs may need to travel north to the mountains where there are hundreds of acres of natural space and miles of hiking trails for dogs and owners to explore on foot.
