Van Nuys a neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles and has one of the largest populations in the valley. It began as a farming community in the early 1900s and it is now the municipal civic center for the area. With mixed commercial, retail, and residential areas, you will find just about everything in this community. It has plenty of pet stores, groomers, and veterinarians for easy access. Not all areas in Van Nuys have amenities such as food and drink for you, however, so if you are counting on these things, be sure to map your walk out in advance.

You won’t need to worry much about the weather in this area as temperatures stay mild year round with some warmer days in the summer. A fair amount of rain may keep you in the house for a couple of days, but you will still be able to walk far more often than not.

Being in the center of the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys is completely flat. If you are a beginning walker, this might be welcome news with no hills to fight as you start. It is also great for elderly pups who may find tackling hills more than they can handle. If you are wishing for more adventure and a bit more of a challenge don’t despair! At the southwest corner of Van Nuys is the Sepulveda Basin Recreational Area where there are a few more elevation changes to spice up your walking routine.

Neighborhood walks vary around the community but most streets have at least one sidewalk. Many streets have two sidewalks and, even better, the sidewalks are bordered with grass and a few trees to make your walks a bit more please for your furry friend. Again, plan your walks ahead of time to make sure the amenities that matter most to you are available.

There are not a lot of greenways in Van Nuys proper but there are opportunities for your dog to get the chance to roll in a bit of grass. The Van Nuys Recreational Area has plenty of open space and some paths for walking. Delano Park is a bit smaller but has a place to stretch out on the leash and kick up a bit of grass beneath the paws.

Perhaps the most notable of greenways is not actually in Van Nuys but borders the southwest corner of the neighborhood. The Sepulveda Basin Recreational Area has some very large open spaces, picnic areas, a dog park, and hiking trails. You will also find a lake, the dam, and a wildlife reserve all in the same greenway. The area is close enough to the southwest part of the Van Nuys neighborhood to be used as both a walking destination and for daily use.
