Grantville is a residential, commercial, and light industrial neighborhood located northeast of the central business district of San Diego, California. The commercial area has many shops, stores, restaurants, and services so that residents of the east side of the community can easily access them on foot. West side residents will need to use a bridge with a pedestrian way to cross the river to reach local businesses which is not as convenient.

Dog owners will find some large chain pet stores and many veterinarian services in the Grantville neighborhood. If you want your dog to join you on an outdoor patio for a meal, check out one of the many local dog-friendly restaurants which include Togo’s Sandwiches, The Purple Mint, Rubio’s Coastal Grill, Emilianos Mexican Restaurant, Longhorn Cafe, and Rakadeka Fresh Thai Kitchen.

San Diego has lovely weather for walking with your dog in the area throughout the year, with sunny, warm conditions. Winters are mild with temperatures usually above the freezing mark.

Grantville is a diverse neighborhood located west of Interstate 15 and north of Interstate 8. It is an irregularly shaped district with a golf course extending off its north side and the Alvarado Canyon on its south side which extends into the neighborhood to the east. The west section is on elevated ground with apartment complexes, the San Diego River, and natural areas associated with the waterway.

A commercial and light industrial area is located just east of the river and there is a smaller section of single-family dwellings on the far east side. The topography has elevation changes and several natural areas where the terrain becomes more varied. The apartment complexes are situated on a mesa above the golf course which is located on the lower ground near the river. When walking in the area, depending on where you are and where you and your dog are going, there will be some hills to climb up and down.

The Grantville Neighborhood Park is located on the east side of the area and has an open lawn, trees, playgrounds, picnic tables and benches, and a horseshoe pit. Paved walking trails that loop around the park make a great place for a quick stroll with your leashed pet in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.

The Grantville neighborhood is right on the doorstep to the Mission Trails Regional Park. This vast wilderness area covers 5,800 acres with 60 miles of hiking trails for you and your pup to explore. The trail is popular with dog walkers, joggers, cyclists, and equestrians, so look out for trail traffic. Features like mountains, the highest point being on Cowles Mountain at 1,592 feet above sea level, canyons, wooded areas, the San Diego River, and Lake Murray provide beautiful natural areas with local wildlife habitats, wildflowers, and desert landscaping. A developed recreational area is also located in the park.
